    Sloooooooooow down

Does anyone know of any freeware out there that can slow down a sound file without lowering it in pitch? I teach guitar and several students have asked about this so they can learn licks more easily. I have never used it so I don't know where to look. Suggestions?

    Yeah,

I bought song surgeon and used it just for a couple of days, but decieded to request a refund. As Wilko said, Audacity works great and does everthing song surgeon does, but for $65 less.

I use Audacity for these kind of things...

    • change a song to a different key or standard tuning for practice
      slow down the whole song
cut out a solo and slow it down
remove vocals for me to practice my vocals

The great thing about all the above is you can save the altered files as MP3's and practice them away from your computer. I put them on my mp3 player and take it to band practice at times.

I only have used the program for mabye two months, but it's fantastic. I haven't even used it for recording.

    Give it a try.

The Amazing Slow Downer for windows is fantastic, costs $50.

Winamp with Pacemaker plugin is FREE.

I use Riffmaster Pro 3.0... Works fantastic! Also you can drop the pitch of the song without slowing the track down too! In fact when I was getting ready recently to play a show I loaded into the software and pitch dropped everything that was in standard tuning a half-step and ripped everything to MP3 (it'll convert to .WAV too). So then I could practice using my POD XT Live and headphones our entire show. Sweet little deal I must say!

    I have Gold Wave......

    http://www.goldwave.com/

Seems to be similar to the other software mentioned. I also use it to clean up older analog recordings then burn them onto discs as "not available in stores" custom compilations.

Best thirty-five bucks I ever spent!

I use Winamp with the Pacemaker plugin. It's free, works well for my needs. It'll slow down or speed up a song without changing pitch, change pitch without changing tempo, change both pitch and tempo, and does a fair job of removing vocals.

I tried the Amazing Slowdowner, and was less impressed even though it did work. I also at one point bought the Tascam guitar trainer device and was equally unimpressed. I gaqve the Tascam away after a while because I never used it anymore.
    POO DAT!!!
