A tele body with a Rickenbacker type scoop out behind the bridge? I'm envisioning a telecaster with a shorty non-tension bar Bigsby. I figure it would get rid of the extra friction, and get the arm to sit in the right position.

look on www.telemodders.com, setzer had made one which might be what you're talking about. only he used a b16 and initially just scooped out to "french" it in. he later went onto carve it out some more.

Ah - the free thinkers cross-refer... it's refreshing... lately!
If I could find a road to get away it wouldn't be too soon....... Shipwreck Moon.......
Setzer doesn't have a bigsby one posted.
What I'm thinking is, like this
only contoured more for the bigsby.

But my woodworking skills are about that of an eight year old. Maybe less.
Maybe I could buy one of those GFS type bodies cheap and hack away at it, and see if it works.

Kap'n,
I've really delved into the Bigsby lately and I've learned the rocking bridge is the secret to the whole deal. If you use a stock T-O-M or Tele bridge you'll end up with tuning problems. Whihc makes sense, any time you ask the strings to move on the saddles...
Arm height, assume you know about the two spring lengths and the penny trick. If the arm is too long - as it will invariablly be on a Tele - (it terminates right over the switch!) the cool answer there is to use the Chet Atkins style arm and cut it.
A Burns style trem might be the bomb on Tele too!

i looked, that tele isn't in his profile, but i know he had a thread on it. it looked really bitchin too. i'm gonna search some more and see if i can find it. i think you'll really dig it.

You'd need to route the Tele equally deep for the front and rear of the Bigsby, wouldn't you? Seems like if you made the rear of the Bigsby lower than the front, that would have the effect of raising the business end of the vibrato arm, maybe to a position that wouldn't be so convenient to your picking hand.

Check out what G&L does with theirs. They rout and sink the bigsby:

Cool. Still got a tension bar, though.
