Problem Tunnig 6 string TELE 72 RI

    Hi,

I think I read somewhere of someone having trouble getting the six string in tune on a Fender Telecaster MIM.

I just had it tune up but I can get this string to tune!!!

Tunning and open E note and than a B note on the 7 fret, you can tell its not in tune... (theres a vibration on the sound if you know what I mean)

can this be a know problem with this guitar (neck, saddle?), is there a fix?

Are you sure it's not just the bridge intonation.

I've also read that many times that fret slots are not always cut exactly on the scale which can cause intonation to be slightly off at some frets.

It may just be a matter of cleaning or slightly filing out a single nut slot. Your buzz may be too much neck tension, too.

But doesnt this mean that in that fret all strings will be slightly off, not just the six string?

You'll need to check the intonation of all strings.

Open and 12th fret should match.

Well, before we go changing everything, how old are the strings? Old worn-out strings often do exactly what you describe.

How close is your neck pickup to the strings?

More of a (like the rest of us).

It's just that it took 16 posts for someone to suggest the most common thing to check (a free thing at that) when someone has this type of a problem.

Wich suggestions was that, what was so funny about the "how close is the neck pick up?" , does this influence the intonation?

can it by something with the pole pieces?

The pole pieces are rod magnets, and if they're too close to the strings, they pull them out of tune every time they vibrate past, causing 'warbling' sounds. It's more pronounced with the neck pickup, due to the larger excursion of the strings.

Re: Problem Tunnig 6 string TELE 72 RI

I hadn't considered the pickup hieght because the guitar is a 72 RI. those have humbuckers, not the magnet pole Fender pickups.

But pickup height certainly can cause wavering and intonation issues. It's called "stratitis" and rarely happens on Teles.

The CuNiFe magnets are the screws and if it's raised too high it will cause the -itis. It's the only thing I can think of that will cause the "vibration" that's described in the original post.

...and change those rusty, mangy strings. A coating of sludge is never good and can cause the same problems.

Yeah a new set of strings is definitely in order.

    And lower the neck pickup.
