    Volume Knob Question

Hi everyone. I just purchased a new '08 MIA Strat and the only issue I really have is the volume knob is a little off, meaning when it's turned all the way up (to 10), it's actually on 9. Is there a way to take it off and thread it on there properly?

Thanks for you help, and by the way, I love the git.

    Re: Volume Knob Question

Just pull the knob up and off of the shaft, then press it back on in the orientation you want it. A tip for pulling knobs is to use a piece of string (usually a shoestring) to wrap around the knob between the pickguard and the bottom of the knob. Grasp both ends of the string and pull, the knob will pop off with no problem and won't scratch the pickguard. Unfortunately, you may find yourself crawling around on the floor looking for the knob afterwards. They can fly pretty far.

Thanks for the reply, Mesotech. I'll try it and let you know if I can find the knob afterwards.

    Re: Volume Knob Question

This is one of the many uses of a house cat. If the cat sees the knob go flying, all you have to do is follow the cat to the knob. Of course, with some cats you'll have to be quick to ensure you get the knob before the cat bats it under the stove.

    Another tip:

Tape a second piece of string to the knob, like a leash, that way when it goes flying it won't go far, and your cat won't get ahold of it.

If you have one of these around, for working on trim panels
for your car, now's the time to use it on your knob.

you cuold just turn the knob. the pot should stay put and the knob is smooth on the inside. It'll turn that few degrees.

    Re: Volume Knob Question

I think that would be a bad idea. Maybe my Strat is different from most, but the pots on mine have knurled shafts that have bitten ridges into the plastic knobs. If the knobs were smooth on the inside when they first went onto the pots, they aren't anymore.

In any case, if the volume knob is on so tightly that you can't remove them with your bare hands, I think trying to force the knob into a new position is more likely to damage the volume pot than to fix the problem Rob's talking about in the OP -- or possibly loosen the pot, which is going to require pulling off the knob to get at the mounting nut anyway.

Still one more variation on this theme:

Use THREE pieces of string: One to get under and lift the knob, a second to secure the knob from flying off into space, and the third string secured around the cat's neck to prevent the cat from batting the knob under an appliance!

    Re: Volume Knob Question

Or.... tie the third string to the cat's "package" so that when he goes to swat the knob he'll ..... well, you ge tthe picture.

Actually, this is just training for the future. If you need to remove another knob, the cat will remember the last time and will decide to keep his knob in place.

Or how's this: Clamp the knob in a vise, and use a piece of string to pull the guitar off of the knob.
