    Stupid speaker question(s).....

i have a SS Bronco tweed amp about 12x12x7"..it has a 10" spkr in it.

    1) can i change the spkr to a 12"?

    2) if i get a *great* speaker to put in it, will the sound *vastly* improve, or will the sound improvement be negligible?

    3) same Q as to installing a 12" spkr in stead of an 8" spkr?

    thanx

    Re: Stupid speaker question(s).....

so will the sound diff be like day-and-night?

i also just picked a little tweed epiphone SS @ maybe 14" sq
......havent even plugged it in yet
maybe get a 12 in there

so, assuming i have a big-ass-hammer, will the sound be *that much* better?

I haven't heard a Fender solid state amp yet, whose sound could not be vastly improved with the liberal use of a big-ass hammer.

a more efficient speaker will cause it to be louder.
If the speaker is 'voiced' the way you like, it will - in all likleyhood- sound better as well.

Unfortunatly, you don't know until you try or know someone who has and try thiers...

I'm thinking if you decide to put a 12" speaker in a cabinet designed for a smaller speaker, you'd need to make sure the cabinet has enough spare room not just for the new speaker's larger diameter, but also for its greater depth. You wouldn't want to cut a bigger hole for the bigger speaker, then find out the driver is going to stick out the back of the amp.

You probably already thought of that, but I thought I'd toss it out there.

Some tweed pros had that "feature."

I think the box size would radically affect this.

My Fezzter has a 10" speaker in it, but it sounds more open and less "boxy" than my Blues Jr. did... probably mostly because Fezz chose a good speaker for the amp, but partly because the cabinet it's in is, like, 18" square.

A 12" speaker jammed into a box that just barely holds it, I think, would tend to sound as crowded as it would appear.

I'm thinking of having a cabinet made for a single 12" as a companion to the Fezzter, and when I checked out Weber's boxes (so it would match, natch), I decided they are too small... when I do it, I'll order order one of their 15" (18" x 18") boxes with the baffle cut for a single 12". A Fezzter 'Prince G' mini-stack!

    got it.
maybe i'll just consider putting in a very warm, soft spkr
...maybe that'll counteract the brittle sound of the SS?

would *that* be a better idea?

You could try putting a tube OD pedal in front of it.
    http://www.rivercityrockets.com/DynamicDuos/9.jpg

    It might sound cool.

But if you don't really LIKE how that sounds, you'd at least have the psychological advantage of knowing a vacuum tube is involved.

    Re: Stupid speaker question(s).....

    ok

    then i guess my next question would be;

which speaker mfg would you suggest that could warm-up the sound of the stock SS amp?

i appreciate all you're replies so far.

    Re: Stupid speaker question(s).....

    Seriously?
I really might start with something like an EQ pedal, for some kinda' drastic tone shaping, rather than a speaker that might cost about what the amp's worth.

I've actually used the Tube King between my Bluesbird or Strat and a Peavey keyboard amp with pretty nice results.
It wasn't a rocking out type of application, but it sure warmed up and smoothed out the sound.

It's just something I had around.

    Re: Stupid speaker question(s).....

    hmmm....

sounds like i'm gonna consider 'plan B'...which, if i were brighter, should have been 'plan A'...lol

i want a relatively light weight tube amp w/ a 12" spkr, and prob custom covered in something stupid....i like LOUD....and i like the 12" pushing some air...and if it breaks-up early enough, then no boxes at all...but i want a great clean sound too at higher volumes.

so...do i just want everything, or what?

Wait until you see what Jim and I are creating...

...well not like we're doing it together, but he's directly/indirectly involved.

    Kinda...is.

    Frank -

    you could ........if so inclined.......

purchase an Epiphone Valve junior Cabinet cheaply, install a rally good speaker that would work with mulitple amps, and posess a well made extension cabinet that is a great tool in the box......

I run mine as an extension with the HRDx, with a couple of other amps that friends use, and have been dying to try it with a Pro Jr.

i reloaded it with a Warehouseguitarspeakers.com Veteran when they were $29 Man...........I wish I had bought a few of them!

Of course, ......how did you say that about your opinion possibly changing at any time without notice.???

    Edited.......to add......

I AM A DUMBASS>>>>>>> Did not heed the Kap'ns alert!
