Refin, can you tell me more about this? I seem to remember reading something about them having upgradable necks somewhere...

AFAIK, the 22.5" and 24" necks are interchangeable, though you'll have to tweak the intonation.

Neither is interchangeable with the 25.5"

The answer is that nobody would choose one for its tone, its just mediocre, and the value is purely rarity - like coin or stamp collecting. I had 2 of them back in the day, modified and upgraded with various pickup changes, and they were great at the time because you could get a flawless neck and body to hop up for like $50 used. One I played as my main garage band guitar for 2 years.

If you really feel the need to have an old guitar that is actually playable sitting around, its not a bad deal. I think that a new standard Strat/Tele whatever is a much better guitar in every way and would leave you with change for an amp and some pedals.

The only thing good about the Mustang is it's non-standard look. I've always loved the way it looks.

I thought Mustangs were overpriced when they hit six bills back in the Nirvana days.

    Mustangs are like Squire strats.

Well, I thought '60 'bursts were overpriced long before they hit six figures...

Mark, you could be the first person ever to liken a Mustang to a 'burst.

What about a Bass XI neck?

You could probably put that on a Musicmaster or Mustang Bass. Just guessing.

In the case of the Musicmaster, at least the pickup would line up right.

I saw Johnny Winter use either a Duo-sonic, Mustang, or Musicmaster in February 1969 at the Fillmore East. It may have been one of several guitars used on the 1st Columbia LP. Checkout Leland Mississippi Blues.
