Amp breakup usually starts a fire.

Fortunately that hasn't happened to me! Surprising, too. After all, I built my amp. It's hard to screw up a Tweed Champ, though.

Wow, it took an impressive amount of cajones for you to type that. One quick perusal of the recent threads in the amp section seem to tell a different story.

If I of all people can fix it, the problems were minor. And aside from the bum rectifier (which wasn't my fault I may add), it did work just not the volume control.

Technically, that's still considered "screwing it up" though. Hmm...

At least I didn't blow it up like I did that 5F4 Super I tried once!

Like a champ! (pun intended) Seriously, this little thing kicks ass.

I have noticed that the sound gets kinda dirty before it starts getting really fat. It's on the clean side, just with some hair around the edges. Then once I turn it up past a certain point it starts getting really fat and saturated, and more grind too. Where are the speakers breaking up and where are the tubes breaking up in this quick this-is-where-the-sound-changes assessment?

In this specific symptom, I would suggest that the speaker is breaking up first, then the amp. Once a tube becomes fully saturated, it doesn't get any more saturated afterwards. When you turn up to the point of the speaker breaking up, you still have lots more room with noticeable difference as you turn up even more. If the tubes were breaking up and becoming fully saturated, it would top out there.

Of course, this still isn't conclusive that it's speaker breakup, because there's more than one tube in there. At first, you could be clipping the preamp tube, and then the power tube, and never achieving speaker breakup at all. Or it could be the power amp tube first, then the preamp tube, and still not the speaker.

The real only effective way of telling is by changing components out with different spec components to see what effect the changes have. I'd start with the speaker first (if it's an option). Plug into something more effecient and rated for more power than your current speaker. If the breakup is the same, then it's probably not the speaker.
    POO DAT!!!
