I assume your friend has notified the local music stores to keeps their eyes open for it?
I remember a couple times when I was working at GC, we got a chainwide email about some stolen gear and not 20 minutes later it comes walking in the door (in the hands of the crook, of course...)
took it to the office and called the cops...
The point is, a lot of bad guys will just bring it to a guitar store to get what they can off it.
I'll keep my eyes open, though I doubt it'll migrate out my way...
Man, I can't imagine. I'm not a violent man, but I'd seriously think about hurting somebody who took my guitar.
People who steal are sick, flawed and worthless. I don't understand the thought process that leads up to taking an instrument. Most times musicians are in pretty bad shape financially, something a theif should be able to empathize with. But they don't. I hope your pal gets his guitar back.
It's a long shot, but sometimes instruments do come back.
One of the instruments from this thread, a tele type, owned by Greg Lisher of Camper Van Beethoven/Monks of Doom, was recovered recently. Somebody not a party to the crime contacted them through their website, and an arrangement suitable to both parties was worked out.

I wonder what ever happenned to Dinosaur Jr's gear. Wonder if they ever recovered any of it.
One time I remember hearing about a guy that got his van ripped off during load-out. They got a custom Premier drum kit, in Kermit-the-Frog green (pretty obvious) with all the trimmings. The guy called us to keep our eyes open. A day or so later, one of the other stores sent out that the crook had pulled up wanting to sell a drum set. There it is, still in the stolen van, everything there, down to the drum key in the ashtray.
last I heard, the bad guys are still in the clink.
What happened? The listing reads "deletd by author". Did your friend get his bass back?
Ah crap. Some guys just have all the shit luck, eh?
We received a message, kindly forwarded by singer/songwriter/good-guy
David Johnston, that
MIKE RIVARD'S STOLEN BASS
has been returned. The message says:
"We got an anonymous call to Mike's cell last night from this woman
saying that her very drunk, very troubled brother from out-of-town was
very, very sorry. She dropped it anonymously in the doorway to the
Cambridge Common and called management so they could take it inside.
Didn't even ask for the reward money.
"Since she knew to call his cell, which we posted everywhere, it
really was the fast publicity and help of the community to spread the
word that made all the difference. We're extremely grateful for the
support of all the music world and friends and grateful that the
people who took it had the courage to do the right thing.
"Happy endings all around!

A '61 Fender Bass has popped up in San Diego. Some weirdo photographed a vintage bass on a crappy leather couch for 10 grand:
