    Fret rust

I just bought a brand new Fender Special Edition Lite Ash strat a couple weeks ago. Anyway, i hadn't noticed it, but my guitar teacher pointed out that on a couple of the high frets, the fret wire has some rust on it. I am wondering how big of a deal this is, and if its fixable?

Very light buffing with very fine steel wool should do the trick (does wonders for built up finger crud too). You can tape off the fingerboard if you're paranoid -- but I don't: very fine wool, very light touch.

You sure it's rust and not some kind of varnish?

Yeah, use 0000 steel wool. It would be a good idea to use blue painters tape on the fretboard, especially if it is your first time. Also it is very wise to put tape over the pick-up pole-pieces, cause the steel wool fragments can be difficult to get off of them. And yes, you should remove the strings to do this. ;-)

Definitely mask off the fret board if your quitar has a maple fretboard. The fine steel wool (.0000) won't bother rosewood, and is good for cleaning up crud buildup around the frets, but it's not so good for maple.

Also, mask the PUPs for the reason mentioned earlier.
