I bet you have at least one piece of furniture or building materials in your house that are "aged"
I bet you have at least one piece of furniture or building materials in your house that are "aged"
Not intentionally!!!
well,my dog has done a fair job of relicing the couch...i guess i should have said i dont get the guys that spent an extra 1 or 2 thousand bucks to buy pre-reliced guitars.but i have scrolled back onto the pink one and i DO dig the efforts put into relicing it at home.to pick up a piece of sandpaper and age a new guitar would take...true grit
I think I have an idea for the finish on your next project!

Talk about "gnats and lint..."

definitely an amber tint.
Yes, but are you FAKE aged?
I'm tellin' ya', that Taylor Hicks look-alike you had goin' on was pretty scary.

that, of course, they are many in number; or that, after all, they are other than the little,
shriveled, meagre, hopping, though loud and troublesome, insects of the hour."

no,my 93 honda has some painted over nicks...
Look! What is your problem with me? I told you I am not flaming anyone. If you are unaware, the items you listed are much less valuable unless they are in great condition. By the way, my house was custom built two years ago. Everything used to build it was "brand new". Again, I'm not saying people shouldn't do it. I'm just saying it's not for me.
Sounds like somebody got up on the wrong side of the rock this morning.
Several guitars in different colors
Things to make them fuzzy
Things to make them louder
orange picks
no way!
i want my Stratovarius to be ...ummmm......chrome blue.
where's my Krylon?
Imanidiot.
i must admit the pink one is pretty cool...ive got an oly white one under the bed whispering "beat me".but im trying not to listen.gots maple fretboard too,it might look good with a few bruises
When was the first "relic" type strat sold by the custom shop? Was it in response to customers who wanted that "rock star used" look to their guitar... to get props and respect from their audiences? As long as I can remember, I have seen pro (and semi-pro) musicians on stage with beat up looking Fender guitars. A roadie buddy of mine claims that Keith Richards won't have anything to do with new guitars.
I have always leaned toward the more "worn in" instruments because they always sounded better than the new ones. I've seen guitar owners who treat their guitars like their Porsche. They walk around it with a polishing cloth looking for smudges and fingerprints... Usually these are not players... just owners..
If you play in a gigging band, an electric guitar will eventually take on the appearance of a "relic'd" instrument? Are we all in agreement of that?
Then again, George Benson probably keeps his archtops pretty nice, and still remains a legit player. Likewise most modern country stars probably keep their Fenders in a state of Turtle Wax shine....
I'm a relic guy, but once lived on the other side so either way is all good with me... real old is better than fake old, but fake old is better than brand new with certain exceptions.
Good topic.
Hey 71818..love your work.
It's all art..funtional art but art none the less.
Cheers and beers
I have decided to be happy because it's good for my health.
Since people are posting fake Relics, here's mine (though mostly not my work):
Jeff
Nice job!
Well here's my idea of a "relic"......
IMO a lotta the stuff that is foisted off as "relics" looks like some hottentots playin' around with bandsaws an' chisels.
This here is the real deal.
I really like the pink Strat too! Fortunately, I've already got my own pink Strat.
s'all goof.
I have to say, I was truly surprised to be flipping through a catalog and see FMIC is offering Gretsch relics now.

For me, it's just about the feel. I grew up as a shredder with those raw, oiled necks and then played the snot out of my '66 strat to the point there's no finish on the back of the neck and the body paint has a very matte feel. So I dig the relic idea.
Has nothing to do with portraying any image at all. Most of these poly guitars and even most newer plastics are so UV resistant, they won't age even after a ton of gigging.
How long did it take to completely wear through the back cover?

i'm a bit confused. relic or not, its a guitar, no? play the durn thing. (the debate will go on, though, i fear)
i'll take it either way. 71818, if you want to unload that pink strat... just gimme a call!
What amazes me is that none of the recent posters to this thread appear to have read the rest of it.
I'm all for new folks digging up old threads because they have something to ask or say on the topic, but heckfire, read the gol' dang, dad'burned thing first.
Agreed, Fezz......top drawer.
I guess I was thinkin' more along the lines of those abso-tively horrid hack jobs that inevitably turn up on evil-bay. You know the ones I'm talkin' about -- like they took the guitar out into the parking lot at lunchtime an' let five buddies kick it around like a soccer ball. Then let some ding-dong with a palm sander loaded with 180-grit spend an afternoon "pleasuring" themselves. Followed by the de rigueur charred headstock corner (demonstrating definitely that the damage from a slowly-smoldering Pall Mall looks exactly like the disfigurement caused by fifteen minutes' worth of Bic butane lighter).
Oh......did I mention -- the guitar started out as a S/S/H Squire Bullet?
Where did you get the pickguard?
Been looking at what they call the mint green and its a little too minty if you know what I mean. Been looking at others but this one has a nice tint to it.

Eh lint kind of like dust.
And dust is just us in the wind.

That's a MIM '60s pickguard I bought on eBay. I've found that they look a little more gray than green. The MIJ ones I've had seem really bright, almost flourescent. I need to tint it a little, along w/the knobs & p'up covers, to make it fit the finish a little better. Right now they stick out like a sore thumb.
After 35 years and dozens of guitars I think the real charm of old guitars is playing a well played vintage piece that feels vintage and well played. I agree that up to a point you can fake vintage appearance but you can't fake vintage feel, and you can't fake the chops you'll pick up wearing out a new guitar, over say 20 years of constant playing.
