I see Gibson is pleking their VOS guitars. has anyone done a strat yet? I played one of the Gbsons and it seemed really nice. hard to tell without a before and after. Any pleks out there?

uh... plek?
s'all goof.
Do a search, I recall reading that someone on the board had a guitar plekked.
LOL, yea Plek, here's a link http://www.plek.com/
I did a search but didn't find much. thanks anyway.
Did my Jan. '64 Strat, post refret - FANTASTIC!
thanks Joe, where did you have it done? Thanks
Had Joe Glaser refret and Plek my '56 Gibson Junior. The result was mind-blowing. Best money you'll ever spend on any guitar. WAY better fret dress than even the best luthier can do.
Interesting. May I inquire how much it costs to plek?
s'all goof.
$40. Same as in town.
Several guitars in different colors
Things to make them fuzzy
Things to make them louder
orange picks
$140 or so? Something like that. Hell, some well-known luthiers charge 2x that for a fret dress. If everyone could experience the Plek, they'd be a believer!
do I look like I know what I'm doing?
I contacted the guy in Bal'mer who's got Plek (www.philtone.com). Seems like a nice guy, responded quickly to my email. He charges $150 for the plek treatment and $290 for a refret.
I've had my guitar about 4 years and the frets do show some wear. Having never done a fret dressing before I don't know if there would be any problems re-dressing what's there or if it would need to be refretted. At that price, I may as well just buy a new neck.
I think Plek'ing is something I'll just have to put off perhaps indefinitely.
s'all goof.
You can tune a piano but you cant tune a fish!!!!!
REO Speedwagon circa 1980......
Ya gotta wonder how Jimi got by without all this stuff.
"No harmonic knowledge, no sense of time, a ghastly tone, unskilled vibrato, and so on. Chuck is one of the worst guitar players I know" -Gravity Jim
Didn't Jimi plek his guitars with his teeth?
POO DAT!!!
The Plek is one of those things you finally get done then wonder why you took so long to do it. At the least, get a guitar Plek'd when you need a fret dress. Does wonders for playing with low action, no buzzing and incredible intonation... and I had a '56 Junior done that only has a stoptail bridge! No real intonation settings to speak of. It intonates better than any other guitar I own!
I went for it. I got my lp back from peekamoose guitars in NY (anyone hear of these guys?) I was worried about sending my guitar here, but I'm in NJ and they're the closest Plek dealer . The bigest difference I find is the sustain and pinch harmonics (ZZ top) Also the guitars feels a lot faster. Peekamoose recut the nut, which is the only problem I had with the job they did. The strings were creakin and hanging up in the nut (poor nut job) They charged me $166 for the plek and another $25 for the recut nut. So far I love the Plek, the problem is wanting to send all my guitars to be Pleked
Who doesn't love a great setup and fret dress?
I just can't help but wonder if it's one of those things where the more you read about it, the more you might find your guiatr(s) lacking, and the more you pay for, it the better you're prepared to like it.
"Well, I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused..."
Elvis Costello
I always read about it, but now that I see Gibson and Heritage are using it, it gives it credibility IMHO. My problem is, I can't find a good set up guy close. I'm sick of paying for a fret dress and set up ($125) and the guitar dosen't play much better. I'd rather let the computer do a better job on the frets. The rest of the tweaking, I like to do myself anyway.
Does plek handle a compound radius?

According to the FAQ on the Plek site, it does.
s'all goof.
Easy he didn't care if he was out of tune so why would he care if he didn't have the proper intonation.........Originally Posted by Offshore Angler

Why? Like everyone else, he was just working with what was available at the time. He was an innovator, so he was pushing the envelope with the existing technology, and he'd probably be doing that today... but fundamentally, it was Jimi, not the gear that made the music.Originally Posted by jamme61

You could also check out the thread "Got Pleked?", over on the Les Paul forum. Particuarly the comment about a certain big-time repair guy considering getting a Plek machine to do lower cost fret leveling, while actually charging more for his non-Plek deluxe fret work.
I wish they'd have a movie on the Plek site showing the thing doing what it does, from A to Z.
I'm thinking of bringing my strat over to them next week. Seems like a bargain for what you get, especially with my MIM Deluxe Player's where the dressing might be an area in which the Custom Shop hands might make a difference. I do like the idea of it, as far as the inhuman precision and the measuring of the neck under tension.I went for it. I got my lp back from peekamoose guitars in NY (anyone hear of these guys?)
