    Another weird project progress post

    Say that fast 5 times....

Anyway, The neck is now done. I re-crowned and polished the frets and cleaned the fretboard of it's 20-some years of gunk. Here are some shots:

Try though I did, I couldn't get the edge of the veneer to disappear. I got the color pretty close, but no matter what the edge of the veneer wanted to tear. So, I said the hell with it.

The front is a whole different story. The veneer pack had a couple pieces with moderate flame. I couldn't use one on the back because of the grain pattern, but on the front it made no difference.

And here's the finished decal. I changed the serial number, figuring if I was going to venerate someone in perpetuity on my guitar, I'd rather it was Terry Kath than Tommy Tu-Tone. I'm surprised no one mentioned this one in my previous serial number thread. It came to me just as I was about to print the decal. Duh!

If all goes well, I should be doing final assembly some time this week.

    Nice work.

I like the serial number, too.

That looks so great. How did you manufacture the decal? Dumbasses want to know!

Inkjet water-slide decal paper. Simple stuff, just spray it with some clear acrylic (any brand, don't get sucked in and buy the little can the decal places sell) and let dry overnight before dipping it in water. White for dark surfaces, clear for light surfaces.

One other note, I found a new favorite for neck finishing.

Minwax wiping poly is the sland.

I used the oil based satin, not sure how the water based would be, but oil is all I could find locally. I probably would've used the oil based anyway for the amber tint, water would be crystal clear.

I'm using it on the body too, the jury is still out on that one.

    Hmmm...
    Searching for something to say...

    Ah!
    Nice work, telecast.

So, the amber tint we see is from the oil based stain?
Is there any color to the "whiping poly?"

Re: Another weird project progress post

    You're confused....

The oil based wiping poly has an amber tint to it, like varnish. The water based would be crystal clear and non-yellowing.

I did use a touch of vintage amber stain on the new maple veneer so it didn't stand out so much against the older neck maple. Most of what you see is the whiping poly.

    I misread satin as stain.

Okay, what was once a nice thread has now got scarey.

Now look, I've spilled me chicken entrails all over the keyboard.

(well I say chicken entrails, have you tried getting hold of good quality chicken entrails lately? I reckon I've been landed with sparrow entrails here. Best I'll manage is a slightly tetchy demon with a touch of the flu....)

I've heard you can get good entrails at parts is parts.

Nah, you try getting an original entrail. What they do is buy up the originals and then part 'em out.
