G&L makes great guitars ! But if your expecting a Legacy to scratch the Strat itch .. think again ... Neck is a bit wide for my taste, Bridge is great the Dual Fulcrum design is great !!! overall finish is better than most Fenders
But the fact of the matter is ... well ... I just couldn't get THAT tone ...
I Sold my Legacy last summer and got a AVR Jazzmaster instead, the Legacy is a good guitar .. but I guess that if your a hardcore BMW or Mercedes driver
well ... you might feel queezy aboard an Audi ...

Well when you look at how there manufactured, there built in the original fender factory. With the Original jigs and machienary etc. It's a great deal. It's kinda like buying a custom fender at a fender standard price. And the quailty is great too.
But just like stratoclutter said, you just don't get that sweet Fender tone out of them. Thats why I bought a Fender and not a G&L myself. But im still thinking about getting a Asat
Actually, they're not built in the same factory. I beleive the original is now a house, or a parking lot, or something. The last FEI location is still a series of buildings, occupied by light industry, and a bar, The Fender Bender.Originally Posted by Constellation80

When you get right down to it, Leo's company FEI, moved in the Spring of 54. Nobody complains about the post '54 models, made in a different factory.
Several guitars in different colors
Things to make them fuzzy
Things to make them louder
orange picks
The ASAT is better than a Tele.

I have Fender Tele's and an ASAT Classic. The G&L is nicer than my American '62 more like my Closet Classic in build quality. G&L ASAT's out Tele Tele's but I'm not real fond of their Legacy's as I haven't found one that fit's if you know what I mean..get an ASAT though while they're still cheap!
I had a USA Fender Strat. Then I picked up a used Legacy as a backup for gigs.
I sold my Fender and never looked back.
I just checked out a bunch of teles over the couple of weeks. I liked The Fender teles....
But I loved the ASAT. So I bought one.
I would if i could my friend, currently I'm building a tele which is sucking what little resources i have dry.Originally Posted by tuberattler

Now has anyone used a guitar with the "z-coils" what are they like?

I have a JJ hellecaster with SD z coils They sound incredible.
I haven't liked any of the G&L's I've tried.
I looked at and played four G&Ls. Two were ASAT and one was a Tribute and the other a Legacy.
I almost went for the Blonde ASAT but ended up with the American Deluxe from Fender (for a bit less coinage).
If, at first you don't succeed, don't try skydiving.
Two leaps per chasm is fatal!
I've had two G&L guitars, neither were as good for me as similar Fenders I own.
They were very nice, mind you, but definitely not as good for my tastes.
"The ASAT is better than a Tele." In YOUR opinion Chuck. It's tough to add that "IMHO" I know, but just consider it from time to time.
Oh Man..........

You have something to add Mikey?
Nope!

pc, nah, I'll stick to my guns. Nearly every Tele slinger of note has made the jump. It's the superior instrument.
Look at the Helleacasters. Fender made the signature editions, but they PLAY G&L's!

Nearly every Tele slinger of note? Okay, I guess you're right then
Seriously though, I'll be the first to admit that I personally find the ASATs to be excellent instruments and FAR better than the G&L Strats, but the US-made ASAT I owned couldn't hold a candle to either of my American Series Teles, nor especially to an American Deluxe. In my opinion. But I'm not of note.
When it comes down to basics, they're all just bits of wood with strings and other accoutrements added onto them IMHO. and nothing to get your knickers in a knot about IMHO.
To answer the thread question, for me, IMHO, the G&L stuff is better than your average mid-priced guitar and different from the Fender offerings in the same or similar price-point. IMO FWIW.

i LOVE my G&L's.,
and luckily, the resale values are down b/c people don't know what the hell G&L stands-for......
hahahaha.....
Good & Looking
lol
and the COMMANCHE's have the triple *Z* coils, and they are waaaaaaay too much for my simple skills, but .......
USA G&L's build quality rivals ANY guitar made in THIS world, surpassing many.
Imanidiot.
Frank, yep. Fact is, I prefer the Telecaster but I realize the ASAT is a superior instrument. I know how to tweak a Tele to get it up to G&L standards, but with an ASAT Special, you have a guitar that's right and as good as it can be from the get-go, with no modding. If I wasn't full up with great Teles right now I would be looking for an ASAT Special. The other thing I've noticed is I play lots of Teles and find about 20% have the right stuff, but every single ASAT I play is dead nuts on. I don't understand how they make them so consistent but G and L must have been onto something. But then again, you gotta figure those two guys knew more about how to build a Tele than anybody else!
And to me, an ASAT is really more of a "Fender" than the stuff pushed out by FMIC these days.
IMHO, that is. :)

We don't have PM here Frank. Never did as far as I know. If so, I probably have a stack of 'em somewhere.

once again I'm not saying G&L Legacy suck ... I'm just sayin that overall the 12 '' Neck was toooo much for me and I got angry trying to find a Twang I liked ...
The ASAT ... now that ... that my friend is a guitar, very impressive ... but once again ... for a guy like me who owns Esquires, and Other Tele'' type '' Guitars ...
it is what I call an '' exotic ''
No Real fun doing the simple stuff ... Amazing with the tough stuff !

Hey Pc, I just wanted to apologize for not thinking to reread the rules before posting that thread you deleted. I guess it was desperation mixed with sleep deprivation. I'll try not to slip up any more.
Thanks for everyones input, it is too bad my local store does not carry G&L

No big deal at all Johnnda. Everyone goofs now and again, myself most certainly included.
It was a VERY worthwhile cause, just slightly afoul of our rules in posting. Don't give it another thought.
I have 2 stores locally that deal G&L. Neither one can keep the ASATs in stock. They sell out too quickly. One of the stores had a couple on the wall that belonged to his distributor but could not sell them.it is too bad my local store does not carry G&L
G-Mc--which two? I know of one here, where I bought one of my G&L Strats, but which two do you know of?
(I went nuts trying to track down my ASAT several years ago--finally ordered it from a dealer in Florida).
PC,
There is a guitar shop in downtown Westerville, on State St. I think it is called uptown strings. It is right downtown. The guy started carrying G&L about 4 to 6 months ago.
The only ASAT he had with the colors that I liked belonged to his destributor and He couldn't sell it. He offered to order me one, but I found one from another authorized dealer for several hundred less.
Oh okay, the place that does the high-end jazz guitars and acoustics. Cool. Thanks!
Check out Wildwood or Daves for the limited Thin Skin Teles (and Strats)
Without question, the best "Telecasters" ever made. period.
I love G&Ls and have owned quite a few. However any ASAT I have ever played pales in comparison to these Thin Skins. If you get the chance play one of these new Teles and you will buy one (Better hurry though, they are selling real fast).
