Both hands can be used for muting. Could you be more specific about what you're looking for?

Use your thumb on your left hand to mute the top string and mess around with your other fingers to mute the other strings while you use your single finger to play the note while you strum all of the strings really really hard....
I think...

as ugly as it is...yes, the thumb can be very useful. Good and proper technique can absolutely kill rock and roll tone and attitude! ;)
The thumb is not NECCESARY to mute on the fretboard. Good lefthand rock techniques can allow for very specific muting that is usually developed over a LONG PERIOD OF TIME. Years of playing can get you there if you know what to look for and how it may be accomplished.
Using all four fingers of the left is very helpful. That way while your 2, 3, 4 fingers are fretting your 1 can be muting strings behind.
Leaning fingers over to deaden unwanted strings is another way. mostly this will happen subconsciously after many years of practice.
Right hand technique with a pick or not is also needed. Palm, finger and pick deedening all help.
Most of these will be happening simultaneously and constanly changing as the notes change.

Sorry, sorry. I suffer from having a degree in classical guitarin'. With my teacher in college, if he saw that thumb he'd shoot it right off!!
I'm not putting anyone down here, just having a little fun. Do with your thumb what you will. Stick it wherever you like.
