I've been doing it so long I'm not sure I could describe it. You might have to swallow some pride and ask the guitar shop guys to show you how they do it. Or maybe have a guitar teacher show you.

I don't do it this way though. Pick up Dan Erlewine's book. It has some good stuff in it.

Or get locking tuners like hudpucker suggests.

I don't have a problem with that but it takes me a little while to get them all nice and purdy wrapped aroung the things, I wanna get locking tuners but from what I can see they are like $50 new.
    I got nothin'.

Man, you honestly can't figure out how to change your strings?

No offense, but are you permanently on crack? Because a 5 year old could figure it out.

Re: I cant change my own strings

Locking tuners are worth it, JPage. It honestly takes me about half a turn for the strings to be perfect, whereas non-locking tuners take about what, 50 turns? It's ridiculous!

Re: I cant change my own strings

This is basically ridiculous....... Pull the string to about an inch beyond the apprpriate tuner post and with your thumbnail as a fulcrum put a 90 degree bend in it. Place it thrue the post and turn the tuner so the string winds from the center out over the top of the post. Preferably a half wrap over the inserted string and there will be one or two turns under the string on the post. For the 1st and 2nd strings, do the same thing but when the bitter end of the string is inserted thrue the post hole, bring it back around as shown "fezz's" example to lock the end and wind it which will probably be 3-4 wraps on the post.

Wham-Bang thank you mame, it's done. Stretch the strings, bring it to pitch and go for it......... Next day retune and your in good shape.

That's the way I've been doing my elecs and acoustics for 45 years with good results. Now locking tuners are a different animal. The suggestion of watching your tech do them is a very good one, just to see the proceedure one time. Having a tech do it is expensive and a waste of time.

I use one of those twisty things to turn my tuners but it still takes a while. I'll probably invest in some locking tuners.

Re: I cant change my own strings

If you've got more than 2-3 wraps on the 3rd-6th strings it's too many, bend the string and inch beyond the apprpriate post, insert it and turn the crank. The 1st and 2nd strings will have no more than 3-4 wraps on the post. More than that and if you use the trem you WILL definately have tuning probs. I garauntee..........

Put the Model 'T' starter crank do-dad on the back shelf and do it the easy way. Give it a hand job, it works!!!

The D'Addario site has a video showing how to string normal tuners. Go to the D'addario strings site, videos section, product demos, how to string video. I use this method on my LP and it is the best and quickest I've found for standard tuners.

Gee! Blair must be as old as I am.
I second his method and Fezz's example. I lock the string over itself, stretch and tune, and stretch and tune. Cut off the extra string. Seldom more than two wraps around the post. Stays in tune for weeks barring temp and humidity shifts.

Re: I cant change my own strings

I've got to say I'm in a similar boat to the dude who started this thread.

After about two years of using my Tele Custom's tuners, I bought a set of 50s style Klusons for a project guitar. I figured that they'd be like the ones on the Custom, just oval pegs.

One thing I noticed was that, for some reason, the end of the string kept on slipping out of the little hole. A lot.

It was taking me about six tries to get the string wound without it slipping out of the hole midway through a wind. I'm still not sure why this happened...
i bet this really annoy's you if your a grammar freak.

Take a look at "Fezz's" locking loop example in his Reply. That's a standard old school acoustic post wind. I only use it on the 1st and 2nd string anymore.

I find even 1st and 2nd strings stay in tune using the "first wrap over, rest under" method with a couple or three turns under. I honestly cannot see how a steel string with a kink in it can slowly slip round a tuning peg.

Check out "How to make you electric guitar sound great" by Dan Erlewine. Just got my copy yesterday, there's a whole chapter on how to wind strings.

Here, have a look at this page and the "Restringing Clinic - Steel String Guitar." Some pretty clear photos of the process.

    Frets.com index

That's a good site to have bookmarked anyway. I think what you may be missing is to keep tension on the strings as you wind. That makes them look nice and neat.
