How is it that color under 2 of my 70s Fender guitars have disappeared in heavy wear spot areas but it still has a dull Polyester coat over it? I thought this Poly stuff was airtight.

Maybe the finish isn't polyester, but oils, dirt, and sweat from your hands? Clean with naptha to verify. I would probably leave it.
It's actually a clear coat finish over those wear marks. No big deal, just a bit of a mystery how the paint can vanish and the proctective coat remains. Probably some logical scientific principal at work here that eludes me.
how bout worn & finished over or maybe its a sealant coat before painted
