Removing some lacquer from a neck..

I have just purchased a '56 relic strat and the guitar is fantastic.

However, the back of the neck lacquer is a little to thick for me. Any suggestions on how to take it down "some". I would like to leave a little on and not completely strip it to the bare wood.

Sandpaper, micro mesh, steel wool? Gauges?

    Thanks for your help

Use some '0000' steelwool or an 800 grit sandpaper. I prefer the steelwool.

One caution about using the steelwool, cover the pups with tape or a towel. The magnetic poles in the pups will draw the steelwool shards and it's a pain in the butt to get it cleaned off. The shards will also scratch the finish if not gently wipped off or with a soft damp cloth or vacuumed then wiped off. Best thing to do is tape and isolate everything except the area that your working on.

Works great and no more stickey back to the neck!

    Hammer on........Blair

I second this recommendation. I've used steelwool on every RI Strat I've owned.
