This is actually not the first time I've heard of it, but i'm still at a loss as to how you one actually breaks off the "whammy bar". (Maybe that's exactly how, as it was intended for tremolo and not full blown "whammy".) You're regular repairman can do it, or you can do it yourself if you are mechanically inclined and have some good tools. Basically, it involves drilling a hole in the remnant of the bar, and using an "easy-out" to unscrew it.
