    Hendrix using the NORMAL channel...

    I was watching the Hendrix at Berkeley dvd the other day, and there was a close up shot showing his rig, showing him plugged into the NORMAL channel of his head, daisychained to the normal side of the second head!

    God damn- I wish I'd seen that thirty years ago- I've been wrestling with the tone of my strat through the bright channel in Marshalls since 1970!

    so THAT'S how he did it!

    (Oh, and maybe a bit of voodoo...)

    YOU CAN GET ALOT OF HEADROOM AND INTERESTING TONES OUT OF THIS CONFIGURATION BUT HENDRIX DIDNT INSPIRE ME TO DO SO \I NEEDED TO USE ALL MY HEADS FOR DIFFERENT TONES PLUS I USE A SPLITTER BOX INBETWEEN THEM ALL

    I USE A NOISE GATE TO KEEP IT ALOT QUITER YEA MY TRIK AND JUST ENUF TO OPEN UP STHE GATE SO THE OTHERS AMPS VOLUME UP TO ON MODE .......TRY IT SOMETIME

    YOU CAN DAISYCHAIN THE NORMAL CHNL OF ONER HEAD INTO THE BASS SIDE OF ANOTHER HEAD AND THEN GO VISA VERSA BACK TO A NORMAL CHANNEL

    I LIKE THIS APPROACH BECAUSE THE BASS IS MORE CONCENTRATED IN THE MIDDLE IF YOU PLAY 2-3 AMPS USUALLY BASSMANS OR MARSHALLS LIKE I DO

    ITS A WORKABLE IDEA
    I USE A HIGH GAIN AMP FIRST FOR MY DIRT MAIN SIGNAL AND SIMPLE FULL REVERBS THA AMP IS MY #1 AMP THEN I PLUG MY GTR INTO IT
    THEN I SEND THE SIGNAL TO A VOLUME PEDAL THEN THE CLEAN CHANNEL (NORMAL) HEAD \AMPLIFIER

    IN ANOTHER CABINET BUT I SPLIT THE SIGNAL BY USIN A VOLUME PEDAL OR YOU CAN USE A GOOD PAN PEDAL ITS REALLY KOOL I AM IN SMALL BANDS SO I NEED TO FILL THE GAPS ALOT MORE THAN MOST
    MY BANDS HAVE ONLY 3 MAIN PLAYERS 3 OF US ALOT OF TIMES MUSICALLY.......I LIKE IT THIS WAY

    Yeah, man, It's gotten crazy around where I live- I usually get yelled at by the soundman 'cause my Deluxe is too loud!
    And I used to use two 100 watt full stacks in the early 70's...

    I just watched that Jimi Plays Berkeley plus the Monterey DVD this holiday weekend.

    Also got me to thinking how obscenely loud those Marshall stacks must have been and how there's little chance many clubs today would even allow someone to play that loud. Then again those amps had to be that loud to get the sounds that Jimi was getting.

    According to the Monterey narrative Hendrix was the only one to bring his own amps. All the other bands used rented amps apparently. I noticed a second logo on Jimi's Marshall cabs in the upper left corner similar to Fender's logo. Any idea what it is?

    That "second logo" is "100"-
    For a few years in the late 60's Marshall put those 100's on their cabs equipped with the heavier g12H celestions, as opposed to the g12M's also in use.

    Yeah, it's hard to do Hendrix right without a screamin' Marshall!

    When Jimi was playing, they didn't have sound re-enforcement for guitar amps like they have today. Hell, you can play a stadium with a Blues Jr if it's mic'd and cranked through the PA. Back then, they needed the stacks of Marshalls to be heard in large concert halls, or outdoors. He didn't use the same rig in small clubs. He typically used a single stack for smaller venues. In the early days, he also played with a Fender Twin.

    I jump the bright and normal channels of my 50W small top plexi and balance the bass and treble with the two volume controls. Great sound.

    I saw The Steve Miller Band in a rock nightclub in Boston back in 1968 when his band had just shrunk down from 5 piece to 3 piece with the departure of Boz Scaggs. (NOTE: THIS WAS NOTHING LIKE THE AWFUL STEVE MILLER STUFF OF THE MID 70s. Ever heard Goin To Mexico? THAT's what this band was like.)

    Miller was playing a Stratocaster through two Marshall stacks. Sure he was loud but his sound was fantastically huge and fat. I can still hear it in my head. I didn't know to look but I'm sure he was running both channels or he wouldn't have had the big bottom end sound.

    Remember the track "Quicksilver Girl" on his album Sailor? Wow did that sound great that night.

    My Marshall's 8-10 bottom makes a very big sound.
