    My DRRI mods

I never clipped the C10 cap to get rid of the shrillness people speak of. I play with the volume cranked into overdrive and use a boost pedal as a "volume break" last in the chain. I know that is backwards and I'm probably killing my expensive Mullard NOS power tubes but it works great for me. Maybe that is very unconventional, but the tone is awesome at whatever volume I need.

Other than the NOS tubes and the speaker, my only mod is the grill cloth:

I don't often use the extra cab and only bring it to stage shows, not bar gigs.

Won't bother the power tubes at all.

    Really? That's good to hear!
I've been doing that for about a year now and though I would be killing them. Nice!

I love the DRRI's. I am probably going to get one but peeps have been talking me into the silver version. I have played the BF and I think it sounds pretty damn good. As in I really doubt most could tell it from the original with the band there.

    Re: My DRRI mods

Mine is from 2008 or 2005 (brain fart), and it had that shrillness for about 3 years. Then it became full and warm. I had changed tubes, which didn't help, but I resisted clipping it.

Glad it's working out for you. That grill cloth is wild!

    Re: My DRRI mods

I have some really stupid questions, almost too embarrassed to ask.

Does the extra cab make it louder? I mean, do you get a half-stack kind of vibe out of it? What does it do for your sound?

Thanks for the compliments on the grill cloth.

    ch willie:

In this case using the extension cab at the same time resulted in an undesirable volume and tone loss. The cab doesn't sound too bad on it's own, but they don't go well together.

Thanks. I wasn't sure, but it does look cool.

Try reversing the leads on the extension speaker, probably out of phase with the combo

If this works, would it give it a more expansive sound? I am so un-technical, and it shows in my vocabulary: Would the amp really be able to push the second cab in order to make the total sound louder or more expansive?

Yes. More square inches of production equals louder equals more air moved. A different type of speaker (make, size, etc) will add to the "expansive" side. As will facing the speaker in a differing direction. If the additional is a pleasing speaker it will be great. Now, can the amp push it? Depends on the impedance matching there. If the total load for the amp is 4 ohms and the internal is 8 and the external is 8 you are good to go.

I thought about this and should throw in "given the SAME EFFICIENCY" on the speakers. I suppose you could add a speaker with crap for efficiency and get nothing in return...

Adding more speakers should make the amp sound "bigger", and depending on what speaker you add it should add another layer to the tone. What you've described in that it sounds worse is that your extension cabinet is wired "out of phase" with the internal speaker of your combo. This happens, and is an easy fix.

Easiest way to explain what's happening is that when you play a note, your combo's speaker is "pushing" while the extension is "pulling". So they're canceling out the signal, thus the volume loss and crappy tone. Same thing happens with pickups, but that can be more involved to fix.

Hopefully one of your speakers has spade connectors as opposed to solder. I'd recommend changing the wiring on the extension cab as opposed to your combo. I'll shoot you a PM.
