    Princeton Reverb Build... Transformers...

Finally getting ready to start a PR Build since the Champ Project turned out so well with the help of Kap'n and few others here... Many Thanks...

A few years ago I bought a Blond PR Cab w/ Wheat Grill Cloth for a 12" Speaker... MoJo Chassis and Parts... Now, finally trying to decide on Transformers before I get started...

Since I'll be using a 12" speaker (haven't decided on that yet), I'm thinking Allen T020, or Deluxe Reverb 2/8/16 ohm? What ClassicTone Power Transformer would be a good match for either, or does it matter? I read something about using the DR multiple ohm Transformer to lower Volume while attaining the 'Sweet Spot' while not 'farting out' a 12" speaker...

I'll be using it at Home to entertain myself, but my Son will likely Inherit it and he may have other 'Ideas'...

    Opinion, Suggestions?

    Thanks...

I built my PR pretty stock with a 10" speaker and Mojotone's Heyboer transformers. The PT is the same as in a Champ and will get the voltages where you need them.

One thing I have to say about PR builds is that I feel that the volume and treble potentiometers should be as close to about a 30% audio taper (rather than a 10% audio taper) as possible if you want the controls to respond like you'd expect a blackface Fender amp's controls to respond. Having owned a few vintage Fender amps, including a 1968 PR, I felt that the Mojotone PR that I built sounded a little flat and dull. I'm sure that it's psychological, but installing Fender J-taper volume and treble pots corrected the issue.

OK, I've done a little shopping and I think I'm gonna go with:

ClassicTone 40-18087 6.6k to 4/8/16 ohms... Deluxe Reverb Upgrade Output...

    ClassicTone 40-18027 100ma... I may get a hankerin' to throw in a couple 6L6's... Is 100ma enough or do I need 120+ma?

    ClassicTone 40-18034 Reverb Driver...

ClassicTone 40-18040 Choke... Yeah, I know Princeton Reverbs don't use a Choke, but I put one in my Champ and the thing is as quite as a Church Mouse... Love it...

Since same spec Hammonds are a little cheaper, would I notice any difference?

Traffic has certainly slowed down here quite a bit...

Thanks for Ya'lls opinions and suggestions...

OK... Opened her up for the first time in a few years... No Problems...

Ain't yer normal Champ... On/Off Switch, Volume w/no Detent... Choke, GZ34, 6L6, Transformer Upgrade to handle it... Yeah, that ground looks crude, but it works... I completely forgot about it... Quite as a mouse... :)

For my first amp build with no smoke, I'm diggin' it... I use it in the Kitchen... Can't wait to get started on #2... :)

I think the bus in the Champ looks good - not a lot of room in there!

Have you decided on a speaker for the Princeton?

Planning is free, new chassis are not.

    Please do report back.

I have spent hours rolling my orphan tubes through my champ clone.

I have no idea what is in it now, guess I had better check.

    Sorry for the derail.

oh wow, a champ with a 6L6. I think I just drooled a bit. I thought that bottle looked a little big in that small cab.

I need to get off my duff and slide my champ chassis into the nifty cab I got last year from a member on another forum in trade for my musicmaster bass amp. I finally found the Jensen C12N 4 ohm speaker I had in storage ... many months ago. I had used that speaker with the champ chassis for years in the musicmaster cab and it sounds great.

now it was my turn to derail the thread.

Probably late to the party, but I am a huge fan of Allen/Heyboer iron:

    "...pray do not imagine that those who make the noise are the only inhabitants of the field;
that, of course, they are many in number; or that, after all, they are other than the little,
shriveled, meagre, hopping, though loud and troublesome, insects of the hour."
