What gauge strings on buddy hollys strat

Hi guys would anybody know what string gauge buddy holly used on his strats back in the 50s. I dont believe they used a plain 3rd back then. Would i be correct in thinking they were really heavey gauges back then.?? Thanks Richard

From what I've read over the years, he preferred Black Diamond strings .013 - .056. But I'm sure he probably experimented with other brands/gauges like we all do.

Never read about Buddy, but in all the books I have on vintage Fenders, they'd have likely been 12's or 13's. That seems to be what was available and used. Country guys and 60's rockers experimented with banjo strings and the like for easier bending and speed. We're so blessed to have such a diverse offering of strings. Probably seems dumb, but seriously, just the amount of after market gear would blow their minds.
