It kinda depends, but a lot of guys use Tung oil, "Butcher's wax", and there's others that work as well. Are you wanting to build a guitar? Refinishing one? Or trying to figure out what's on a guitar you have?

I think it would probably depend on the wood, but tung oil is common. Wax is used on some instruments.

I just built an acoustic guitar and did a French Polish finish on it. It was kinda therapeutic. Sat in front of the television with a glass of scotch on the rocks, and rubbed in the finish. Very relaxing.

I never bothered to polish it out to a high gloss because I like the dull, rustic look just the way it is. I just finished building the guitar and it looks old already!
