    Electronics for beginners book recommendations?

    Hey guys,

I'm getting an unofficial internship at an amp and audio electronics repair place, and I am looking for book or website recommendations that would help me get started. I am looking for something like "tube amp repair for dummies"... if that only existed.

    Thanks

You know, back when I was in high school (dark ages 1966) my electronics teacher gave us all the textbook, had us sign it out for the class, then told us to put it in our desk and forget it until the end of the year. He then told us to go out and buy the RCA tube book. I think that's what is was. Can't remember for sure because I'm so old now. But, anyway, it had the specs for all the tubes in it and some transistor specs. But the best part was it had all the basic electronics explanations you could ever want AND....... circuits! tube amplifier circuits! AND,...,...,,,... it explained how they worked and why!!!!!
We used that book almost exclusively, along with some other stuff about motors and the like for three years. I went off to college and got my electronics degree then became a freakin' tech writer. I wish I still had that book though. Lost it in the flood of 72.

No, but I'd download RC-30. It's got all the tubes you'll ever encounter.

    Thanks for the link, BTW.

Resurrecting this old threat instead of starting a new one.

Darr is over my head because I am lacking basic terminology and how things work together. Ex: "Coupling capacitor" or "Pulldown resistor"

Have tried getting something out of Darr a couple of times, and have been frustrated.

Ideas on a beginner book to start with -- REALLY for dummies..?

definitley +1 on Wilko's reomendation of Tom Mitchell's book (How to Service Your Own Tube Amp: A Complete Guide for the Curious Musician)

It's a GREAT intro to tube amps in my opinion and it really explains things in Layman's terms. It doesn't assume you have a working knowledge of electronics or even tubes for that matter.....

I was in your shoes a couple of years ago. I'd been playing guitar since 14. I really didn't know squat about electronics, and then suddenly I found myself with amplifier problems. I vowed to fix them myself, but I had no clue where to start. I only had the passion and desire to learn. I posted a very similar thread on a very similar site, and fortunately someone with the knowledge pointed me in the same direction as Wilko has done for you.

That's the first book I purchased. I followed it up (again by recomendation) with Dave Funk's Tube Amp Work Book Vol I which goes even more in depth and has most of the Fender amplifier scehmatics and layouts. It was worth the price just for that, but that's when you could buy it for $40.....(apparently it's much more expensive now...out of print perhaps?? I don't know)

Be patient, and the Internet is your friend. There's soo much info out there...and lot's for free as some have already pointed out.

    Good Luck!
    Robert
