Squier Venus
Hey... does anyone own one of these? Ever played one? I seem to remember them being pretty decent guitars.
I'm always nervous when I see "Squier" on the headstock... but this IS a Japanese built guitar. I remember Crispian Mills from Kula Shaker playing a 12-string version for a while. Anyone have any thoughts? I've seen a couple of these pretty cheap. Thought I'd test the waters here...

Kinda "Rickenbacker-esque" wouldn't you say? Reminds me of the old Ric 420. The binding on the neck looks fantastic too. Cool looking instrument!

Wasn't that the Courtney Love signature guitar?

I think she may have co-designed it or something, yeah. Personally, I don't really like her... but it's still a funky piece.

I saw a 12 string that same color. When I went back to buy ti, it was gone. I've never seen another 12 in a store.

That Venus looks delicious!
...but Courtney makes me sick:hurl

the ones I`ve seen in Japan were made in China. Love their food, not sure about their guitars.

Really? I've never seen a Chinese built Venus. Are you certain?

I have the catalog in my hands but it doesn`t say where they`re made. Seems to me the ones I saw had the sticker on the back of the headstock... MIC. We get different guitars here sometimes... the strat and teleacoustics from a couple of years ago were made in China. But I read on the net folks were saying the ones they saw were MIJ.
The Venus 6 and 12 strings are listed in the Squire catalog, and the ones I`ve seen here were MIC. The catalog I have is from 1997... things may have changed since then. The Venus 6 string sold for 55000 yen.

I have a Vista Jagmaster, and let me tell you...if these guitars said *Fender* instead of *Squier*, they would have sold a hell of a lot more of them. It's an awesome playing guitar, and once I swapped out the pickups (SD Jazz & JB) it became an awesome sounding one. All of the Vista guitars are incredible sleepers, and all they need are new pickups. They are on par with any MIJ Fender.

I suspected that, actually. They look VERY well made.

piece of crap!
Don't fall for that cheap piece of shit! In 3 months it'll be that guitar that sits in it's case that you never play. Do yourself a favour, if you want to play one, go to the guitar store and get your rocks off then put it back on the rack and leave.

Well.... considering they don't make these anymore, that might be sort of difficult. Chalk one up for the "crap" vote though...

was this *your* actual experience?
i have 5 squires, and what you've said couldn't be farther from the truth.
sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience.
sorry to hear you had a crappy guitar, too.

I've been really happy with most Japanese built Fender products. I currently have four. I've had many others too.

I guess CHUNKER just needed a place to *poop*.
SAD.

A Venus 12.....
I really want to find one of these. Does ANYONE here own a Venus 12-string, and if so, what's it sound like? Can you get the expected Ric chime from it?

so, can anyone let me in on the price.....???,,,,,,,or do i need to know the secret handshake?
-
Frank, I don't know the exact exchange rate today, but a yen is good for about one US penny... so, 28,000 yen is like, 280 bucks.
And that IS cheap. I wish I could play one, but they seem crazy rare.
-
Is that one a MIJ Fender or a MIJ Squire. It sure seems like the one I saw was a little different, with the drop tip peghead for sure.
-
the business section of a newspaper will give you the buying and selling rate for the yen to the greenback. It`s been around 110 for the last couple of days.

All Venus guitars I've seen have been Squier. Don't think there ever was a Fender version.

In answer to several of the questions so far, the Venus and Venus XII were both part of the limited-run Squier "Vista" series. These were made in Japan and are of very good build quality. The Venus XII came STOCK with custom shop Seymour Duncan pickups based on the old Fender XII pickups.
The Vista series included the following guitars: Musicmaster Bass, Venus XII, Venus, Jagmaster and the Super Sonic. Here's a Press Release with more details and photos:

There is some confusion since the Jagmaster was also produced in China later on under the regular "Squier" moniker. The Musicmaster Bass might also have seen the same thing happen to it (can't recall).
Anyhow, the Venus and Venus XII were only made in Japan on the initial limited run. They are of very good quality, far superior to the non-Japanese Squier guitars.

I'd like a Venus too (grin). Could have picked up a 12-string version for about $300 Canadian not too long ago. What the hell was I thinking?!?

The Venus was only ever made as a Squire, but there were 2 types, The Squire silver series ones were made in Japan, and the later standars Squire ones were made in China.
I'd love to get my hands on any silver series Squire, they are sweet

It was part of the Vista Series. I've never actually heard of the Silver Series. And I've still never seen a Chinese Venus. In fact, I thought the Venus was long gone by the time Fender logos started appearing on Chinese built guitars. I'm not saying your wrong... maybe it was different in different countries.
-
You're quite right Zendocon, I was thinking of the Vista series, silly me
-
I`ve only ever seen the Chinese ones here. Wasn`t tempted.

Sneaky... next time you see one, take a look at where it's made. If you get the chance to try a Japanese built version... they really are a great guitar! I don't think we ever had Chinese made Venus guitars in Canada.
-
haven`t seen one since they first came out. But I will do that.
