    So Strat Confused

    Hey all,

Ive been taking some advice from some very freindly peeps about my 79/80 strat, the thread is http://www.thefenderforum.com/forum/...ad.php?t=44776, in stratocasters ... well here it is, I have just purchased a complete fender tremelo, the block is stamped with PW36 and the underside of the bridge is also stamped PW36, it has fender stamped saddles, in comparison to my 92 MIM strat, the holes are wider, from center to center of the mounting holes it is 56mm, the saddles look thinner than my MIM ones and have an apperance that they are smaller, the retaining screws and springs certainly are .. now .. it does line up with the USA 1980 body but somehow looks not quiet right, not 'man enough' !! .. can anyone enlighten me with this fender PW36 bridge as I am struggling ...
    Regards

The original vintage style bridge on my 2005 Hwy1 was the same size as the vintage re-issue bridge used on MIA re-issues and custom shop guitars, even the string spacing, but it wasn't as nicely made. This bridge is also used on the MIM Classics (and Road Worns?). Maybe you have one of those?

Is the block steel or die-cast? The proper vintage re-issue block is machined steel, the one on the bridge that I described above was die-cast.

    Hi Don,

I thing it looks die cast !!! done some resarch and it does seem as the PW36 bridges were used on the highway 1's, but i can not confirm this ....

Can you post a pic of this bridge, preferably a shot showing it installed on your body?

    Re: So Strat Confused

It's an import bridge -- probably MIM, while the saddles are asian.

That's why the hole for the trem arm in the steel block (presumably US-made) does not correspond to the arm's access hole in the bridge's base plate.

As well, vintage US and MIM saddles are stamped "FENDER FENDER", with one set of lettering reading upside down from the other. The MIJ/MIK/MIT/MIW sets all read thus:

    FENDER
    FENDER

Sorry to bear this news but it sounds like you've been hosed.

If you go back to your original question in the Strat section you'll see that I posted the exact current US-made Fender part number for the complete bridge assembly that belongs on your guitar.

    Re: So Strat Confused

That is a newer Highway 1/MIM Classic Series (I believe Ping made) trem - mounting holes are proper vintage spacing but the string spacing is the narrower MIM style. Hope that helps.

You can usually tell a real USA vintage bridge by the saddles as PM mentioned but even more so by the plate lip behind the trem bar hole - no lip usually means cheap MIM, tiny lip is usually the medium grade MIJ or Highway 1, larger lip = USA Vintage.

Don't be too hard on yourself -- I committed this very same sin (twice!).

Incidentally, the vintage trem kit I mentioned also includes a vintage-style string tree with mounting screw, both in nickel.

    Best of luck
