What is the Strangest Thing That's Ever Happened at One of Your Gigs?

Nothing too bizarre for me. Last summer I turned to look at our keyboard player and when I turned back around there a flute player from the audience playing into my vocal mic. We proceeded to jam out and trade licks (he was way better than me!). My bandmates jokingly call that one Gris' 'Ron Burgundy' encounter, LOL.

But i don't have too many stories cause I'm not a real road warrior. I'd be in interested to hear some stories from some more experienced musicians than me.

This Is a good one; The drummer brought this stupid bubble machine and everyone thought it was cute,cool or whatever? So not thinking about it later in the night, I was useing my wireless system doing Clapton's wonderful tonight and i would go around to all the girls and flirt. Anyway It was almost to the second lead part and i was on my way back to the stage and wham!!! Flat on my back from that damn bubble machine. Needless to say, I held on to my guitar, finished the solo on my back and when the song was over i grabbed the bubble machine and threw it to the side of the stage and gave the drummer an eat shit look!

I blew 2 fuses in the main fuse box of this place we used to play - not in the good way. We were young, did not understand all the equipment we had and had old amps and mics. Well Erock steps up to the mic (actually a good Sure SM58) and wants to sing one of the Ahhhs in "Twist and Shout" and kabooom......2nd degree burns to the lips, a real sore arse and all the lights were out on the stage. Needless to say, this was an unplanned set break.......

After that I learned what grounding is, how to check it and make sure all follow da rules - I am the enforcer for this - for the obvious reasons.....

That and the time 3 dudes walked in the back door of a bar butt naked but that is a different story...........(turned out to be a fraternity prank that got them arrested.....)

Not one of my gigs, but I was at a blues show at the Star Cafe in Devon, and all of a sudden about fifteen dead heads show up, dance a big circle around the room, and dance back out the door. Apparently they all just showed up in a couple of vans, then, went down the block to the next bar, presumably we were just one of the venues on the hit list.

I showed up at a restaurant/bar, to back a woman I was in an acoustic group with, on a really modest solo gig.
In the mens room during a break, some guy said he liked my sweater.
That stuck me as a little wierd.
I went outside to get some air. The singer was having a smoke.
There was a sandwich board sign by the door (which wasn't there when I brought my stuff in): "Gay and Lesbian Singles Nite."
There may, or may not have been an exclamation point.

Suddenly, the interest in mens fashion made sense.

Not extraordinary, but funny. I played a big wedding party at an old oceanfront mansion one time. We had a 20 YO kid filling in on bass. We were worried because in his group (Chili Peppers cover band) he was frenetic/jumped around all over the place. He also played barefoot - ALWAYS. We get to the gig and go to check out the wiring. Is an old house with all sorts of ground problems. We are to play on a brick patio (see where I'm heading?). Kid gets zapped every time he plugs in, but won't put on shoes ("I can't play in shoes" he whines). Finally, it's time to start. I come back with a rubber place mat - "Fine, stand on this all night." It was perfect! We had him on a leash. He couldn't step off that mat or he'd be zapped, LOL. He hated it! Just to rub it in (we didn't get along) I made sure that I both moved around more than usual and stepped all over him sonically (I was playing a '66 Super head through a 1x15 tone ring cab). Talk about him getting his. At the end of the night, he was fighting mad. I said "You know who the greatest front man ever is?" - "No" - "Mick Jagger." - "Know how he got to be the best?" "How?" "By playing in tiny basement bars where had a 2'x2' spot to work all night!" That shut him up! LOL...

The strangest thing? Hmm, I'll have to think about that one for a while.

This isn't the strangest, but funny in a way. I got caught in a hallway with a percussion player from a famous funk band at a gig down in Baltimore. He kept wanting me to meet his "Lebanese freind". Well, I "met" his freind - pure black hash. After 10 or so minutes I said "Hey, I gotta play in 45 mins, so I need to chill out on that". I floated back to the green room and later on stumbled through a set wondering how f'n drunk the other two guys were. In my head I was thinking, we got here too early and they drank too much. I had no idea that they also were hanging with Mr Black Lebanon, both at seperate times. It wasn't until the next day when one of the other guys mentioned "I was in the hallway when ____ blindsided me with some hash and I could even see straight after that". The other guy said, "I met his "freind" upstairs about 15 mins before we started. I had trouble walking down the stairs after that and I knew we were in deep trouble!"

Like I said, not the "strangest thing", but the fact that all three of us were cornered at different times by the same guy and thrown for a serious loop right before we went on to perform was kind of funny. The audio from the shows proves we were pretty f'd up. We never played with that drummer (actually 2 drummers, there were two drum sets set up and the other band's drummer joined in at some point, and someone else started playing percussion too) before either, so that was our excuse!

No shit! When I met Bootsy, I really didn't think it was him. I thought it was a Bootsy imposter becuase he was all done up in his usual attire. That and he was short, I thought Bootsie was at least average height. It wasn't until after that someone confirmed it was him.

Played a Lounge Gig one time that I had to perform CPR. Guy made it and I'm awesome !!!

When I was single I used to be a whore. 1 gig in particular I had my choice of 3 attractive girls. I choose the one that lived upstairs for obvious reasons. When the gig was over we went upstairs and when she took her clothes off she was missing a leg. Stupid Jerk that I was I ran out and jumped into a car of the one of the other gals and asked her to take me home. Not really funny I quess but you had to be there maybe ?

Ever do a gig when it's Hair piece nite ? I used to play this one place regular and it seemed like everyone had a bad hairpiece. As the nite got long some would fall off. The Horror.

This particular community is known for having people that are in the upper range of human longevity and in fact many are contributing to the increase of the average lifespan of humans. Except for the guy who had a heart attack and collpased in front of the mixing desk. The show went on while the EMTs (who were always standing by during the concerts) treated him and wheeled him away to the waiting ambulance. Lot's of folks sitting around going, "whew" after that one.

Played a place called The Bar in Lebanon, TN right next to a roach hotel. They went and had a wet T-shirt contest. It was the first time I recall wanting towels and immediate cover for the "ladies".

I was playing a bar in Billings Montana and in the middle of a Springsteen song someone set off a few firecrackers. Right away the bar empties and as the EMTs are coming in I realize that this guy was just murdered right next to our sound and light guys. They were pretty shaken.

I was the first one of the band to show up at the gig and the bar owner tells me it's going to be a great night, reservations for 65.... I'm thinking who reserves for a bar? Also, why would someone reserve for 65, knowing that the bar probably only holds 100 or so.. Just then, a group of ladies walks in and waves, followed by more ladies, followed by more ladies. I see more ladies coming in from the parking lot as I'm getting gear out of the car when it hit me that some of the ladies these were the most muscular women I'd ever seen. The beards started growing halfway through the night and by closing time, very little of make up was left in tact.
