    components on new pedals...WTF?

i hope this is the right place for this.

    gotta vent:

the last two pedals that i've bought and opened up (i do this with everything i buy) have had micro components in them. is this a new trend? sure i can still pull them out, but they ain't a decent size like the other pedals i've worked on. the EH micro pog and now the dunlop el grande bass fuzz both have teeny tiny parts on the boards... makes me wonder.

they look like the parts on a computer pc board. i guess it's a way of cutting costs? the POG now has a problem with the power, i tries retensioning the power input to no avail. i don't know if this is a problem with the power filtering matrix, or with the jack itself. i have half a mind of just gutting it and putting something else in there. i guess we'll see.

    rant and bitching over.

Surface Mount Technology, it's not just for computers anymore.

Expect it on anything digital, and a lot of mass produced stuff.

The current crop of BBE pedals still use discrete components.

It's jus' a sad commentary on the over-use of the terms "new" and "improved", Chuck.

Forty years ago, we went to the moon (allegedly) on the backs of slide-rules an' vacuum tubes.

Now -- in the high-tech digital era -- we cain't make a fuzzbox that'll last more'n about three or four gigs wiffout crappin' out.

    Sad......

    Yeah go figure!!!

Friggen businesses are run by bean-counters who know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

Sadly over the years I have discarded quality equipt that with hindsight I wish I had simply repaired and kept.

thanks guys, i knew there would be some sympathetic souls here.

el capitan: i've liked all the bbe pedals i've tried. maybe not the best, but well worth the investment. i think i might try out the boosta grande.

It's not just the digital pedals. The MXR Carbon Comp has a micro sized surface mount devices.
Other than modding, they're not a problem. They've been used in reliable devices for years.
It's the low budget designs that they're often used in that's an issue.
