Anyone ever recone their own speakers?

My collection of blown speakers is starting to pile up: A couple of "15 JBLs (w/AlNiCo mags), a couple old Jensens, & now a "12 Altec someone has bequeathed to me.
This is getting crazy & I've got to do something w/them. I see kits on eBay, but I don't know the first thing about what is good & what's junk. I'm too cheap to send them out & have it done.
Has anyone ever reconed or at least replaced the surrounds on a speaker? What does it involve?
    -thx

As I understand it, to do it properly, you need a magger/demagger.

You need to demagnetize the magnet to be able to clean out the gap, and then remagnetize it once the speaker is together. Otherwise you can get crud in there that causes rubs.

A magger/demagger, IIRC, costs around 10K. That's why there are only a handful of renowned recone places. Weber, Orange County Speaker and Uncle Spot are only ones that come to mind.

Thats not so.The company I work built the sound system of the madison square garden PA here in NYC and two months ago I reconed 3 of the system 10" mid drivers, and the hardest part was scraping off the old suround and spider from the basket.
Voice coils/ formers and glue are non- magnetic so blowing them out of the voice coil gap if need be is not a problem.
old Alnico magnets getting weak could be a problem that would make you send them out for a re- charge.

Just start using Webers. He's clones pretty much every speaker ever made. And ... he will re-do them for $25 no questions asked.
