    'Fender' tubers - caveat emptor!

Major bummer, maybe this is old news, but think twice before ordering any 'genuine Fender' tuners. I just got a set of Fender 'f' tuners and they are nowhere near as nice as the ones Fender was selling a couple of years ago before the mysterious year long out of stock episode. I believe i saw on the packaging 'made in S. Korea.' Meanwhile one dealer tells me the 'genuine Fender Schallers' quality has fallen off and these 'German' beauties are now being made in Taiwan... :-(

balls. doesn't surprise me though... sad to say. if you don't care if it has the f i believe kluson makes em. i have some gotohs on my jazzmaster, and for 30 odd bucks are a sweet deal. much better than what came on my MIJ.

The repro Kluson single- and double-line tunahs come from the Republic of Korea (not sure about the ones that Tone Pro sells). Fender's original "vintage style" clones were MIJ by Gotoh. It seems as though ever'thang has been outsourced off-shore these days -- even Grover.

I think Grovers are made in China.

I'm not sure how long that's been the case though.

Gris, not clear on how you got these.

But a little insight on how things can happen.
Most of you are aware of how to source quality parts, I am sure.

I had a hiccup in my life where I owned, ran, a small music shop.
I tried, but could not become an official Fender Musical Instrument service and retailer due to the fact I had the same road address as another music shop...which was actually 6 miles away, and not even in the same city. But I could at least get some access to Fender parts through wholesalers. Some better than others, as I found out.

Musicorp (hopefully there are long gone), was one of the shadier ones...they had "Fender" logo'd knockoffs that had genuine Fender packaging, but the contents were absolutely cheap knock-offs, made in God only knows where. I ordered once, got the shipment, opened it up. And was pissed. I gave a call to them, got a run around, and was so ticked I went to their distribution point and sales office in Charelston, SC. How convenient...Charleston is also a large processor of Hyundai Shipping, Cosco, Huiang Yang, you-name-it.
The fuggers wanted to take me out to lunch for stopping by, as I was holding the boxes of knock-off crap they had sold me!
Bottom line...there is a lot of junk out there, in very good packaging.
I got my cash back, on the spot.
And took the wife to a nice place on Shem Creek.
Watch your retailers, and the distributors.

Thanks for that heads-up, Kev. I haven't been a "victim" (yet) but your experience will keep me on my toes when buying parts.
