Funny- ruined my Strat neck Truss rod!

Guess with all the amateur tweaking ive done it was bound to happen sooner or later. You shoulda seen me go to town on my beautiful 275.00 USACG ebony Strat trus rod trying to get the action as low as possible. It was funny in a way i guess. I was turning that truss rod like a maniac. They say its hard to ruin neck truss rod . Well, I did. Booo! Live and learn. 275.00 down the drain! weel, I did always want to try MOSES GRAPHITE neck. Guess this is a good excuse as any.

    Bummer.

My rule of thumb is if it's hard to turn, don't.

Try a bit of lubricant, and try again.

If it still doesn't move, back it off, let the neck settle, and try again.

I've never had to go even that far.

Next step is bring it to a pro.

    Ouch.

WWDED? (What would Dan Erlewine do?)

Not that you should actually attempt this yourself...

... but the message is that perhaps the neck isn't toast ...yet.

What happened? Did the rod actually break or did the screw threads strip? Just wondering, since the first neck on the S+ I currently own went bad and I had to replace the neck. I hadn't played it in a few months, and one day took it out and the neck was badly warped. Rod couldn't get it straight again as if it was stripped.

Investigate the truss rod saver tool from Stew Mac. Dan Erlwine has one and uses it regularly. Or have the truss rod replaced. Or send the neck to me and I'll fix it and use it. :)

    Frank,

I think the replacement was around $150. Fender wouldn't just sell the neck, I had to send them the old one first. The store that handled it owed me some money for a guitar I sold on consignment, so the owner included the price of the replacement neck.

I'm having a problem understanding this... When I adjust a truss rod, I usually don't have to turn it much at all to get the proper relief.

I just don't understand cranking it really hard. If I did that on any of the necks I've worked on, they would all go into a reverse bow long before anything would break, especially a new neck...

Sorry, I'm just dazed and confused again..

If you want to sell that neck cheap, let me know. My wife has been asking me for a neck so she can build a lamp out of it.

That reminds me.. How hard is it to take a truss rod out? That would be a great way to route the lamp cord!

    Urgh.

No more than a quarter turn at a time, please...

And yes, I learned that the hard way!

I asked about that and two stores I deal with both said the neck couldn't be repaired. I didnt pursue it or ask any techs. At least the replacement neck I got from Fender was real nice.

Re: Funny- ruined my Strat neck Truss rod!

I called USACG and spoke with a ..spokesperson..and he was very cordial. He indicated that since my truss rod was still exhibiting resistance at the furthest extent of its travel, than that the prognosis was positive that the neck was salvagable. He described the process for trying to straighten it out- which was to keep full tension on the strings, and loosen the truss rod and let sit for 24 hours. Then turn in increments of 10 to 2 on the clock , and no more for, i think he said, within the timespan of an hour. After hearing me describe my kamakazi truss rod adjustment, he suggested taking it to a proffesional tech. Yes, I shall! I want to try and see if I can get this neck back in line. USACG is no longer accepting orders for tilt gibson style Strat headstocks, and the reverse headstock coupled with the tilt makes for a unique neck. Also, the tone was excellent.I am inclined to believe there is somethoing in the tilt and reverse that contributes to the tone.

You know, a thick-guitar-pick-neck-shim could have gotten the action REAL low.

As detuned stated a 1/4 turn at a time max! Preferably 1/8 turn and let it settle for a while. I wouldn't truss any other method.

    Pun intended!

Well, it's kindof a secret....I'm not saying it's never been done before, but my use will be somewhat novel. When it's finished, I'll post a pic, claim my status as a ground-breaker (or idiot) and all will be well in the universe...peace may come to humanity as a result.
