i just bought me a bass on ebay for 650 shipped. needless to say i'm stoked. i never owned a fender before and bought it as my third bass. i play a yamaha john myung signature that i bought 7 years ago ( when i was 12) but my main bass is a carvin lb70p. i was wondering how i can find out the age of the bass without taking off the neck. is there a way by useing the serial number? some of you may have seen it on ebay. it was called a "frankinbass"
Depending on when the bass was made, if you tell us the first letter and number on the serial number, we can often tell you what year it is, though it's not always accurate.
But honestly - If itis made of lots of different parts, as most franken-axes are......no way to tell beacuse it isn't truly a produced/manufactured guitar.

we'll see soon. i siked for this bass. i'm at school right now so i can get back to you about the serial number when i get home.. i can see it on the back plate, if the plate is original. i was told that the body and neck are original but someone changed the finger board. what year would you guys think it is.. roughly
as for the rosewood, my 6jm has and ebony finger board and my carvin have birdseye maple. so something different won't hurt!
from what i can see on the neck plate it say 342619. theres no letter seen

Off the top of my head it looks like maybe a '70's P-bass that has been modified. Nice even ambering of the finish, great looking guard. If the neck is nice and straight I'd say you got one heck of a deal for $650.00

from what the owner told me he bought it in 1980 and it was already fretless. he had the pickups installed by eric johnson's guitar tech in '83.
oh and he got the gig bag from jaco in '86
