How many would you like to have?

    Stratocasters in general,

Yes, another one of these threads.

I just started playing strats about 1.5 years ago. WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG!!!??? (Been playing 10 years now)

I own 2 awesome strats, and I can't seem get enough of 'em! I keep gassing to buy more, because there are so many tasty variations out there. Usually when I GAS to buy another guitar I start looking around for what can be sold. All I have are "keepers" right now though.

I've made a few stupid purchases in the past 5 years, and that's tough to own up to. A 2,100 Jem that I ended up losing 1k on, and a custom Carvin that I spec'd out incorrectly for my tastes. I've since ordered 2 more Carvins that are just perfect for me, thank god! Also, a stupid amp purchase ... Peavey Classic 30. (Not too bad though, it's staying in the family with somebody who will put it to good use.)

How many strats does everybody own now? If you could return any of them for a full refund, what would you have left in your arsenal?

Also, if you cannot afford your dream strat arsenal ... may as well list 'em anyway.

Keep it to a core group of Strats, but don't treat it like you're going to a desert island or anything.

I have the EJ, which is darn fine geetar even with those typical issues that it's infamous for.

The 60th anniv. USA will make a fine road warrior once I start to play out more. I have this guy tuned to Eb and strung w/ .011's (Little Wing never sounded better)

I would also like to get something vintag-ey, AVRI ... or whatever I end up with just to keep at home for light playing/recording. I was looking at the '62 AVRI, but after playing one, I'm not crazy about the thinner neck. The custom shop idea seems cool, but I don't see myself shelling out that kinda cash for something like that. Maybe a AVRI 70's Oly. Wht. on rosewood? I'm gonna take my time acquiring my next one. Who knows where i'll go ... but it's going to have a 7.25" radius and vintage frets.

So, 3 for me ... what about you?

Two. One with a rosewood fretboard and one with maple. Same thing for Teles.

my dream strat would be a 1962 olympic white strat, rosewood neck with clay dots and perfect frets, a little wear, and aged to perfection.

    I've got one.

Maybe I'll buy another someday. Maybe not.

I'd rather have different guitars than a whole bunch of the same thing.

I have one Strat-like guitar that I feel is just about perfect.

If I ever learn to make this one do everything it can, I'll shop for another.

Re: How many would you like to have?

I've had as many as 5 or 6 strats but have settled on a just a few "keepers" One is a big heavy ash that was my first real name brand guitar. Another is my 1960 slab board. Those two cover all the range of real strats. The other is my Warmoth/Fender with Gibson Humbuckers and Gibson tuners. Those three do all I "need" strats for.

Of course, a major lottery win would change the number considerably.

I have 3, the 60th Anniversary, a MIM Satin standard, and a MIM Squire Series. I think I have enough Strats (for now). I never get GAS to buy Strats, they just seem to follow me home. I love their functionality, but I always seem to GAS over real pretty wood (which explains why most of what I have are sunbursts and flames).

Re: How many would you like to have?

I like to have 1 real good one. It makes another totally unecessary (in theory). I've been through many to get there, but I'm happy (for now).

I also like to have 1 Les Paul, 1 Tele, 1 Semi hollow Gibson, 1 nice acoustic...

Re: How many would you like to have?

Well, I would "like" to have a bunch of them !
But the truth of the matter is I only need two.

I really like my 60th anniversary American strat! It has a nice two-piece body, 7.8 lbs, very resonant, with 10-46 GHS Burnished nickel strings, and to me this thing sounds wonderful! I love this strat!

I have been looking for another, and I thought it would be the Eric Johnson, but I've played a few and they just don't do it for me. Don't get me wrong they are very nice, but just not for me. I like rosewood boards, and modern trems, although, I like the 12" radius fretboard.

So I finally bit the bullet and ordered a Pro Closet Classic, Arctic white with a rosewood board, weighs 7lbs2oz., and I am excitedly anticipating it's arrival. If all goes well this will be my #1, with the 60th as my #2, and really should be all I need

I have two, which is one too many. Since getting back into playing after a long time, I'm finding having a lot of guitars (9 is a lot for me) is a distraction.

Just 1 strat, a 90's strat plus. However, teles that have been following me home with increasing frequency.

    This

    is it for me.

I could picture me building some kind of parts-o-caster with some other type of p'ups, P90's or Filtertrons, or one of each.

Re: How many would you like to have?

I'm in a weird phase of life right now. When I was a kid ... I wanted guitars. Now, I can pretty much have whatever I want. (within reason)

Hopefully I'll settle down on the purchases soon. I'm gonna need a house one day, and that particular savings acct. isn't going up as fast with all of these geetars following me home! I live in an apt., so technically I should own ONLY 1 guitar, not 4.

Since Tele's were introduced to the thread. I'd have to go and say that a '52 RI would suit me fine.

Those closet classics (tele or strat) look sweet, but sheesh ... they are expensive! I couldn't justify buying one of those when there are plenty of nice axes under $1500.

I agree. When I go to jam with my friends on Tuesday and Thursday nights I grab my Les Paul and go!
I borrow a Strat when I need one.

That might change soon. I'm putting a full size Humbucker (I happen to have a few of them lying around as well as a cut out Strat pickguard gathering dust) in my Strat hoping to cover more bases.

I have a 2001 Relic 60' Strat, by far the best playing, sounding, feeling Strat I have ever owned/played including the "real" 1960 Strat I sold 10 years ago for 9500.00. I payed 300.00 for it in 1978

I have 2 Strats that really have it covered for me. One would have to really speak to me to feel that I really needed another one.

Just have to be careful to not play another one!

Re: How many would you like to have?

There are currently 11 Strats at my house. + one Ibanez + one mandolin
3 of the strats and the Ibanez and the mandolin belong to three of my four step daughters.
    I have :
    8 Strats
    3 Lesters
    3 Acoustics
    5 amps

I think I could get by with two or three, but why would I want to?

Re: How many would you like to have?

    I wouldn't mind a few more...
in a dream world, i'd have examples of everything pre-CBS, as well as a ferw later model ones.
IN reality, I'd like a maple neck Strat - I was playing the Classic Player 50s a couple weeks agop and was VERY impressed...
I want to find a nice beater lefty and righty-ize it...along the lines of Joe Perry's Sweet Emotion strat... replaced pickups, guard, etc.
I also want to build one from scratch, though I don't know how much one could really call it a Strat... Mahogany body, maple neck, ebony fretboard, haardtail, peizo bridge...
I also wouldn't mind a 52 reish Tele, couple more Les Pauls - a Deluxe and an R7. An LP special...and or junior...
12-string Rickenbacker, Gretsch 6119... (shall I keep going?)

I have wanted a left handed 73 strat hardtail in that ugly brown colour for quite some time, and over the past few months I have been talking my self in to and out of building or buying some teles. So 3 more for a total of 7. Then I start looking for the perfect bass...

This is YOUR core arsenal ... by all means, don't hold back on us!

My current strat GAS may even be taken away by a AVRI 52' Tele. It has all of the neck features that I crave. 7.25" U-shape and vintage frets. Hmmm ...

Dude, I wanted the AVRI '62 based on the availability of the vintage features. More importantly ... I like the look of Ocean Turquoise w/ Rosewood. The '65 CS model is available in Lake Placid Blue, too. Another color I dig a lot. If only I liked that neck profile!

One thing that I'm thankful for ... I'm 28 years old. Which means I've never played a pre-CBS and haven't had the desire to own one. Well, yeah I do ... but I wouldn't even shell out the duckets to pay for one of those sweet closet classic models.

The perfect strat for me doesn't exist anyway.

-Late 60's styling (has to be a 4 bolt neck w/ large headstock)
    -U-shape neck profile
-vintage size frets (preferably SS, but that ain't gonna happen)
-7.25" radius (rosewood) Large clay dots w/ 12th fret markers pulled closer to center. (I love that look)
    -EJ wiring
-Ocean Turquoise or LP Blue w/ mint p/g
    -aged plastic parts
    -nitro finish

sounds like a job for the Custom Shop!

Re: How many would you like to have?

Hi guys, I'm new here. Been lurking for a while, but this thread is too fun to miss.

I used to play Ibanez guitars (been playing for almost 20 years now.) Had a handful of them (max count was 5 at one shot). Used to own Radius Series, Sabre Series, JEMs, JPMs and RGs. Used to swear by them because they were so easy to play, and the tone could be improved simply by changing pickups.

Then I stumbled across a Strat for the first time. Never really liked them in the past cos I always thought they were too limited (no trem, single coils, tuning issues, curved fretboards, etc etc...) And lo and behold, I suddenly felt divine intervention. THIS was the guitar I shoould have been playing all along. (ok ok... tapping on a strat isn't the easiest thing to do though)

But that tone!!! oh! that tone!!! I always wanted that tone Clapton had on Sting's "It's Probably Me". You know, THAT tone! That tone is really what got to me. Not SRV, not KWS, not Hendrix and not even Mark Knopfler. It's not even a real Clapton signature tone (not like anything heard on 24 nights). But it's the most beautiful thing I've heard in a long time. Hell, even John Petrucci's searing tone pales when it comes to that tone. And the worst bit? There's nothing there to hide it! It's a totally CLEAN tone!!! (I only discovered it's clean AFTER I got a strat; always thought there was some efx to it.) Another tone that got me, which I could never get with ANYTHING ELSE was on "I wish it would rain down" by Phil Collins... (ok ok... I know... it's phil collins. so sue me...). But that solo is played by Clapton too! I knew what to do then... There was no other way. I had to have a strat.

So I sold off everything else I had, Ibanezes, Epiphones, almost EVERYTHING with a humbucker had to go. The only thing I've kept is a nice RG1077XL baritone 7 string, which is my super strat guitar. If I want something technically encompassing, I'll pull that one out. But other than that, I've got 3 nice strats now. 1 hardtail (MIM Cray), 1 CIJ 68 reissue, and one AVRI 62 reissue (which is the nicest to play of the lot).

The main thing I brought over from my Ibanez days, was the bit that I wanted everything to be noiseless. So, I stuck Kinmans in every one of them strats.

And the worst bit I discovered, is that Strats, are an addiction. once you buy one, you ALWAYS want one more, especially if you can afford it. *sigh* So AlienQuikSilver, don't fret (no pun intended)... I took a much longer time to come around... heh... But I'm so glad I did.
