I'll tel ya, Guitar Mc... when I went P-90 shopping I played TWO of those DCs you linked to, one in cherry red and one in TV yellow, and they were alright... but for sheer fun, a great neck, and the real spirit of a LP Jr., the Soapy blew them away. I woulda picked the PRS even if the price had been close to the Gibsons. At a lousy 3 bills, it was the best guitar purchase of my life.
It's gonna be pretty sweet lookin' with the guard.
Don, I don't know.... I guess I'll have to ask on the screws. I'm sure they've got some for sale, but I know I'm fresh out.
The Update:
I finished designing the template and tracing for the custom guard this weekend. I experimented with several different shapes for the section under the strings, but it ended up pretty much as described: shaped like the Santana below the pups, but the section that goes under the strings has a straight angle cut, perhaps 20 degrees, terminating at the outer edge of the bridge pup. A combo of the Gibson DC guard and the Santana. It really looks great. Going for 1-ply black, straight cut, like a Gibson.
Template mailed today. I may not get the finished guard for 2 to 3 weeks, but pics will appear here as soon as it does. Any Soapy owners who love it will be able to order one from Terrapin Guitars without paying the template fee.
Sounds great. Will it be a matte finish or shiny?
Thanks for keeping us up to date. I look forward to seeing the the end result.
The pickup covers are shiny, so I went for that. I almost opted for the "bakelite" look, but the whole guitar is just a shade too modern looking for that, I think.
Good choice. I prefer shiny.
I consider a matte guard too modern for my taste (or lack thereof!). It reminds me of the Kramer Pacer Carreras that a local shop had in the '80s.
Cool, I can't wait to see it Jim.
"Well, I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused..."
Elvis Costello
Ooooh, schweet. That looks like a rocker fer sure. Although I prefer the top carve on the Soapy II....
Yeah, with the Gibson name on that original-style headstock, the Gibson's gonna be hard to beat in the market. But that IS a single coil, not a P-90.
Still, my bass player had one of the originals, a '63 Melody Maker in cherry, and man, that thing could SCREAM, Tele-style. We used to let our keyboard player play bass for a couple of numbers and Gary and I would go into twin guitar mode, trading leads on stomp-rockers like "Train Kept A-Rollin'," and man, he would slice me UP with that thing.
But, see? A tortoise guard would look pretty sweet on your Soapy, Don.
Jim,
I've dealt with John from Terrapin. He's a really nice guy, and very accommodating. Would not hesitate to do business with them again.
Also, good choice on the guard, looking forward to seeing the result.

I didn't know Gibson made a $350 melody maker.
Damn you guys.
Thats it, you are all on my ignore list!
One Strat-style single coil at the bridge, like this:
Melody-Maker
There's also a $399 two-pickup version. Gary's original had a flat-capped single coil.... but was it at the neck position? Or am I just rememebring wrong?
Jeru, that's good to know... thanks! I picked them off the Interweb because I liked the options they offered, and they sounded like they would take more care with my homemade tracings that WD might.

It looks like half of a Gibson Humbucker! Weird!
For $350 I'd break out the router (figure of speach. I don't own a router and would have to borrow one) and put a used, $50 P-90 in it.
Actually, I'm seriously considering buying one an doing just that. The main reason I sold my Les Paul Junoir was the skinny neck. I hear these are thicker.
