Amplifying a resonator (Dobro type) guitar

I just got a nice resonator guitar and would like to use it for live shows. Does anyone use one live? If so, how do you amplify it...transducer, mic clip, etc? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Most folks mic spider-bridge instruments. The only transducers I'm aware of are for biscuit bridges, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Would one of the Dean Markley Maple disk transducers work?

I'm not familiar with it, but I'm not really a reso-guy, either.

Elderly Instruments sells a lot of reso guitars from budget models to Scheerhorns, and they often have good prices on things. I'd ask somebody there.

Re: Amplifying a resonator (Dobro type) guitar

How loud will it have to be? Cut through a band or solo or small acoustic group gigs? The best sound will still come from a good mic. Check National Resophonics website for Bob Brozman's tips on miking and EQing a National guitar - very helpful. I attended one of his shows a couple of weeks ago and he was very loud with his guitars mic'd. If you need a pickup, there's a few options depending on what you can or want to spend. Highlander, I think makes a pickup for National type cones and I'm sure there are also transducers for spider bridge (Dobro type) resonators. Back in the day I used a contact transducer that I stuck to the biscuit on my Dobro with National type resonator and it worked quite well although you'll never get the real reso sound as much as you'll never get a true acoustic sound with any kind of transducer/pickup.
    Hope this helps a little.

I've had good results with the Highlander. They just came out with a new model that is an option on the new 14 fret National Style 0 that was just added to NRP's lineup. Mark Knopfler has one of the new ones witn the Highlander setup.

I also use a Highlander along with an Equitek mic. Couldn't think of anything better.

Had great results w/ a mcintyre on my FR-50. Unfortunately, bridge on said guitar was not up to my aggresive playing style. Traded it (partially) on my ES-135 Goth, but still miss having a reso' in my arsenal.
