standard depth neck pocket angle will have a better sound than a shallow flat angle. You want some angle pulling "down" the body, not across it.

Here's an old thread where I drew a diagram. The lower guitar with more angle will sound better, and feel more like your 335 or strat.
Notice the downward force pushing the bridge into the body. Much better tone into the body that way.

OH I see now. I wondered if that is what you meant. So, just shim it and not even try to cut the pocket that way? OK. Will do.

If you are very skilled I'd say to rout it that way. The roblem is figuring out that angle. Flat worked at the factory and is easily shimmed to get the desirable result and still sound great.
I'm liking that body so far. Cool design.

How's the weight, now that you have it cut to size?
Regarding the saddle height screws (if it's just that you don't want to gash your hand)- You can get them in different lengths, so they don't jut way above the saddle. That's one nice plus with Callaham, he considers this stuff in advance. But you can get them elsewhere too.

Yeah, it is nice to have a guitar player (i can only assume) design things. I just can't stand those screws scraping my hand. I learned how to live wit the two giant post screws on my Kimberly, but I just can't stand hight adjustment screws sticking out.
The weight is getting better, but not by much. My guitar teacher who's 1963 ex-esquire i traced, thinks it will be a painful guitar to wear but the sustain may be like a pedal steel. If it is still heavy after the pool rout, control rout, and all that routing, I'll just have to buy a wide gel padded strap.
I'll try to weigh it on the scale in the weight room later today and report back to y'all.
Wilko, It would be easier just to experiment with shims. I don't know what i was thinking... routing at an angle. Nonsense, what a pain that might be.

Either I read the scale wrong or it was wrong, but it didn't work out for me. I would make an estimate of around 6 pounds. I could have removed more wood from the back but this is sleeker then fender's production teles and I got tired of fileing and rasping... I don't want to see a rasp for a good month now.
Maybe i could use someone's bathroom scale.

6 pounds ain't too bad. you'll get a guitar around 8-9 pounds with that.

You'll lose a 1/2 pound or so when you route it out. Maybe a bit more.
Go buy a cheap fishing scale from the local Walmart or such. They're fairly accurate, enough for this anyway.

Telecast, you forget that am in a small town where the only MalWart is only practically accessible by a 15 minute car ride. While I will be the proud owner of my dad's old 1973 MGB GT, it is neither in operational condition nor is it in the same state as I. Oh and I don't have a drivers license (long story).
I do have a bike, but I don't want to go on the highway with it.
And to be honest with you, I have $7.67 in my bank account. I am already applying for a job at a summer camp as a cook/dude with guitar.

I just played a $600 (aprox.) esquier at ye olde local guitar shoppe, and relized that those side walls don't bother me as much as i has assumed because the strings were higher then the walls. So I'll just grind the bridge like chuck did and all will be well. I think I'll curve the corners a bit more then he did though.

This is how I got the 2 GFS p'ups too. I had to wait a bit until he had the two I wanted closing on the same day.

Well, I have acquired most of the parts needed to complete my future guitar. Soon I'll rout, wire, finish sand, apply the finish, and assemble it.
Untill then, here are some pictures of the parts all layed out:
the knobs were pulled off an old and non-functioning reel to real tape machine my dad was putting in the trash.
The red lines on the pickgaurd are cut lines I was thinking about using to customize it's look.
What do you think, leave it be, cut one of them or both?

The "chicken-head" knob & "goes to 11" dial are just some NOS spare parts I was showing off that I indirectly got from Richard C. Heyser (look him up if you want)... wether I'll use the dial under the volume knob again like i did on my black squire, I don't know yet.

How do i locate the bridge placement? do i first have to rout out the neck pocket?

After a long time of doing nothing for fear of screwing up a $35 chunk of really nice cherry that i spent a week shaping into a telecaster body...
I have successfully taken the plunge and routed out the neck pocket. Phtots will be posted soon.
The only problem now is filling and drilling the neck's bolt holes, and drilling the bolt holes in the body so that should I ever want to change out the neck.
any ideas?

Allign the neck plate on the body. You can look at any Fender for allignment, they're all the same. Mark the holes. Drill the body. Check the neck. Odd are the holes will line up. If not, drill new ones.
To drill new ones, allign the neck on the body with the 1st and 6th string in place. Put just enough tension on them to keep them straight. Clamp the neck in place using small pieces of wood to protect the frets and back of the body. Using a small drill, start each hole just enough to mark them, then remove the neck and finish drilling. Watch your depth.
If the old holes are way off, don't bother filling them. If they're in the way, you can get a good fill with the toothpick and yellow glue trick. If they're stripped out beyond repair, they'll have to be plugged.

Thanks telecast, remember I'm using a three bolt neck and converting it to four. that's why the fill/drill.

the neck is now fully bolted to the body, now for bridge location.

I drilled all the holes needed to install the bridge today and screwed it on, but after i finished I noticed it was a little crooked. It shouldn't affect any thing but aesthetics though.

Can you fill and redrill? I mean, it would be a shame to have put all that work into it and the bridge is crooked. The holes are all underneath the bridge.

Well, I might be able to change it by a degree or at least half of one. the flaw is only be noticeable from about five feet away. I'm just so frustrated by the outer two holes (the trouble makers by the high and low e) I've already filled/driled once and it still aint right. So what i'm gonna do now is rout the controll cavity and i guess I'll fill the holes while im on that.

It has fret problems past the 12th fret, and i forgot to buy strap buttons/locks... Ok, actually there is a handful of bugs i need to get rid of. But it is playable for the most part and i'll try to record some sound samples over the weekend.
