How to tighten Tele jack cup.

My Tele's jack cup is loose (not the jack itself). How do you tighten this up? Do I need some kind of special tool?

    Thanks!!

you gotta take it out/apart and re-bend the little metal clip...you'll see when you take it apart...you bolt the cup to the clip/plate

Take the control plate off, stick your little finger in the hole to stop the jack from spinning. Use needle nose pliers or a nutdriver to tighten it down. A drop of clear nail polish or lok-tite on the htreads will stop that from happening again, but justa tiny drop.

The same nut that holds the jack on also holds the cup in.

OK, thanks guys. I got it tight. For some reason I didnt think the jack nut held the cup too. It took quite a few turns.

Um, that doesn't bode well, it should only take a few turns. Did you remove the control plate and stick your finger in the hole like I said?

The biggest mistake people make in tightening these is to just tighten away from the outside without stabilizing the jack. The jack spins, the wire gets pulled tight and will eventually break.

If you didn't follow my suggestion, you should back up and double check.

    telecast,

Yes, I removed the control plate and held the jack in place. I actually had to back the nut off a bit because the wire was already twisted (from trying to fix this a couple of years ago). I got the wire straight and tightened the nut. Maybe took 5 half-turns before the cup tightened, it was pretty loose. Thanks for the heads up.

    FUZZUS PICS; i can just see that wood splitting as that nut tightens {acting as a spreader}

....well, thats what the cup acts as....it acts as thye carriage bolt, right?
in theory, when you tighten the nut from the outside, it should straighten that *clip* and dig into the wood (that 4" x 5/8" carriage bolt just is too close to a finished guitar for me)...kinda like using a steel waffle-cut framing hammer to drive a 6-penny nail....lol

    ...but i digress.......

    Ok, good deal Jam.

If you're going to do a lot of work on Teles, this is a marvelous tool to have handy. Same thing as Ole Fuzzy's homemade deal, but for $16 a better investment in my time.

I've got the stew mac tool too... It's really well thought out.

I found that for installing the Allparts Jack Cup I needed a little smaller O-ring to place the clip in the right place, but a quick trip to the plumbing section at Lowe's and everything was perfect.

    One more thought:

Electrosocket. I tried one for the first time in my recent project. Perfect.

Definitely. This is what Fender should be putting in Telecasters at the factory. I love the Electrosocket. Warmoth sells it complete with a Switchcraft jack.

Just to appease the gods, I'm going to make one and see if it works.

Mike H: I found an off-brand electrosocket type cup on ebay, shiny gold instead of the anodized aluminum Electrosocket sells. It was drilled for an off-shore sized jack. I had to find a 3/8"-32 tap, which took awhile. I eventually found one on-line. Whatta pain in the butt.

So, if anyone needs something tapped 3/8"-32.....

I wonder if thats' the one that guitarfetish sells?? They have one that comes in chrome, gold, and maybe black or something like that.... The price is good... I wonder if it's metric threads, that would suck...

That'd be the one. They ship it with a jack, but it's a piece of crap. It's not just metric threads, the hole is too small as well.
