Exactly NF. If a guitar is parts or all original is doesn't really matter. It's the playing that counts. However, in the collecting market that don't mean jack. It kills me that vintage stuff goes for so much...of course that's probably because I can't afford any of them!

On the other other hand, Clapton was on some serious drugs when he put them together.

I got this link over at the LPF. It's an article about the lady who sold the guitar. Very interesting read. :)

Do you think this kind of thing could happen to one of us?

Well, no wonder she didn't make it to the Opry... look at those fingernails!

The article says this one has a "starburst body". Gotta love journalists. :rl

Wow, look at me pickin' nits. I must be jealous or something...

Still, I think the buyer should go get his own guitar instead of making this lady drive from NE to CA to deliver it.

    Update on this one:

Supposedly, the guitar was refinished. Mr TunOMatic isn't at all pleased, and wants his money back.It seems Ms nice old lady forgot to mention that she sold the guitar soon after buying it, and the new owner had it refinished, then she got it back. She says that she will not return the money, as she had a partner on the guitar (?), another part of the story she forgot to mention.

We'll see how this unfolds, I hope.

The plot thickens. There's even more to the story than that, it seems. According to a post over at the LPF, the guitar has a factory refin.
I guess what comes around goes around for Mr. T_o_M, but it is still too cool a guitar to part out. If he can't get his money back I'd guess that we'll be seeing it on eBay in pieces soon, since it's not "pristine".

I've not seen any press regarding the supposed refin or not gettin gmoney back. I posted the auction text. If the guitar was a refin, and/or she didn't have the guitar for awhile, She is definitely liable and Ebay would take serious action for such a high-profile auction fraud.

The vintage guitar market is insane as hell...but I think all of us are hoping that our current '70/'80/'90 Strat will sell for an insane amount of dough by the time we discover how far (or rather, how not far) our pension checks go.

My understanding is that the guitar was refinished by Fender at some point, which was not disclosed and the buyer did not know. Or so the thread on the Les Paul Forum seems to indicate. Why it's on the Les Paul Forum I don't know:)

I knew this sale was gonna be a trainwrreck. No surprise. Because "vintage" guitars is now a thieves' market, and there is no honor among thieves.

There is only one cure for this craziness, and that is for EVERYBODY to stop giving two flips or a tinker's damn about vintage guitars immediately. Do it now, and you - and the world - will be better for it tomorrow.

What about Kays and Teiscos, and authentic Westerley Guilds?

Re: Surprised there wasn't a thread about this one...

There is a guy here in Connecticut who owns a chain of car part stores who wanted to buy a 50's LP that was selling for $150,000. He asked my friend to go out to Long Island with him to look at it, before he bought it. The friend (a real good luthier) asked to take off the back cover to look at the electronics. The seller refused. He asked to take off the tension rod cover - the owner refused. They started to walk. They finally agreed - they had stripped the tension rod threads and put on a new nut but tried to make it look old. They walked....
