Why, exactly, are Fender Vistas (the ones made for a few years in Japan in the '96-'97 period) better than the more recent Indonesian or Chinese or Mexican-made ones? different wood? better steel? ???

it`s true Fender Japan does make some great guitars. They also make some extremely average ones. Some of my favorites are FJs but some of my best MIJs are not Fenders.
Anyways... I have a 1997 FJ catalog with the Squier Vista series. They are listed as basswood and in the low price range, and generally that means not the best parts available. However, I don`t own one and have never played them so my opinion is based solely on my experience with other FJs of similar prices. On page 4 they do have a picture of Courtney Love playing a Venus model you know in case that might influence your decision to buy one.
