    BB. A grand guy.
Jimi. Met him at the Record Plant.
Jeff Beck -- he was a great guy.
Peter Green -- he was in a BAD mood.
    Brownie McGee -- Mr. Sunshine.
    Pete Townshend - very sharp
Frank Zappa - even sharper, but superior
Ike Turner - Mr Two Face (happy and demented)
Fred "Sonic" Smith - like your pal from down the street

Re: Ever met a famous guitarist?

G.E. Smith in Nashville last week playing with MoonAlice. Awesome...

Here's a good one that I'll try to keep short; I do a lot of back-roads bicycling on my roadbike. A while back, I pass this nerdy-lookin old guy riding his bike. About 10 minutes later, I realize this guy is riding off my rear. He starts up a conversation; asks me if i've scored any good gigs here. I told him some of what I've been doing and I ask about him, find out he plays guitar. I ask if he's got a good gig and he just laughs. 18 years with CDB. It was Bruce Brown. Turns out he's my neighbor.

    WOW, Anarchy in the U.S.A.!!!
I was shopping for a guitar one time on 48th street in NYC when all of a sudden Johnny Thunders & Jerry Nolan appear in front of the store. Mr. Thunders strolls into the store and up to the front counter and proclaims that he put down a deposit on a guitar and now he wants his money back. When he was asked if he had a receipt he said no and put up a little bit of a fuss about it and then finally walked out of the store. I overheard Jerry Nolan outside asking him "what did they say?" Needless to say they didn't give Thunders any money that day!

I've played with Buddy Blue. He's gone.

I once made a nameplate art for an amp that was made for the guy who wrote and produced a regionally famous fair jingle...

Come to think of it. I met a guy online named Colin who came to one of my shows. He's met CJ Neel, who I'm told is close personal friends with Fezz Parka!

Re: Ever met a famous guitarist?

Back in the fall of 1967 some friends and I used to go to the Hullabaloo Club in Colorado Springs. A band that played there frequently was Boenzee Cryque. They had a drummer named George Grantham and a steel player named Rusty Young. They had a bunch of their own material as well as covers of other bands. We used to help them load their truck at the end of the night.

Jump ahead 2 years. I was a student at the University of Arizona and we got to see quite a few name bands (on campus) on our student activities ticket. In early fall of 1969 we started seeing posters for an on campus concert by a band called POCO. The members were... Richie Furay, Timothy Schmidt, Jim Messina, Rusty Young, and George Grantham. I just about crapped my britches when I saw who was in that band.

The evening of the concert I ate an early supper and decided to hang out at the back of the auditorium to catch a glimpse of the band. After about a 30 min. wait, a large white truck pulled up to the back door. The driver was none other than George Grantham. I walked up to him and asked him if he remembered me from the old Hullabaloo Club in Colorado Springs. He said he did, and asked me if I was there to watch the concert. I told him yes and he offered to get me in for free. I told him that I already had access through my student activities fee. He then told me that I could come up after the concert and help pack up the gear, and he would introduce me to the rest of the guys.

I had already met Rusty from the Colorado days, he seemed rather reserved. The rest of the guys were real friendly and lived the part of the "good time" music they played (they were probably one of the tightest bands I've ever heard play live). I recently read that George suffered a really bad stroke a few years ago and I guess he isn't doing too well.

The only other guitarist I've met was Phil Keaggy. I've seen Phil when he's had an off night and his playing was good but not great. I've also seen him a couple of times when his playing was completely off the scale (on the plus side)!!!

What, I'm not famous enough on my own?

Actually, how famous is famous? I went high school with and either knew or was at least acquainted with members of:

    Cold War Kids (Nate Willett)
    Atreyu (Alex Varkatzas)
Death By Stereo (Jim and Paul Miner, Efrem Schulz)

There, that's enough name dropping for now. Wait...

That and my old buddy Ian Fowles appears to be a member of the Aquabats now. What the hell have I been doing? I gotta get off my ass and get a record deal!! (on second thought, no thanks.) Lot of musical talent in Yorba Linda, CA though folks.

How's Andy Partridge? Seems like a cynical fellow but he would probably be interesting to hang with. Just going off of lyrics there.

only ones i can think of off the top of my head would be Steve Earle, Tab Benoit, Buck Dharma and Vince Converse. Steve was gracious enough to sign my copy of his book, Tab seemed like a real gentleman, really only shook hands with Buck, but i've gotten to hang with vice several times over the years. He's a prince of a guy when he's got his shit together...

    oh, and Mato from Indiginous.

weird i meet all these blues cats and i'm not even all that into blues?

He's not really a guitar player, but I was one year ahead of Dee Snyder in high school. I probably saw him a few times, but I didn't know him and didn't find out we were in the same school until a few years ago. My cousin's husband played bass in a band that played a lot of shows with Twisted Sister, and he knew Dee pretty well and says he was a super nice guy.

I met my hero, Ritchie Blackmore.

I won a slot to see Ritchie play acoustic for a charity event. I was one of 50 people.

Say what you will about Ritchie's current direction, but he just slayed the room for 3 hours back in 2001.

Afterwards, he held court in a side room. I met with him, chatted and he signed my cheap acoustic guitar.

He was pretty much exactly like I thought he would be. Softspoken, and excentric as hell!

Why is it Bonnie didn't chase the blues circuit...and went into that pop thing that got her what...one great album?
    Never understood that, really.

She had the mojo to be another SRV, given the right direction...in my opinion.

On the Blackmore..I saw him several times but never met him.
Fans were rabid either for or against him.
He always struck me as kind of insecure, wearing a mask, so to speak.
Great chops, shaky execution. I about got killed over a neck he tossed out at the War Memorial in Rochester back in the day. I gave up, and probably should have just held onto it. Next thing I saw was a biker boot coming at me. Good times! (Naught).

Because she slaved on the blues circuit for years, and got nothing but bad habits?

People change. People's tastes change. Not just audiences, but players, too.

Would you want to be playing the same stuff you were playing twenty years ago? I know some of you still are.

I've met a few and they were pretty much fairly normal decent guys.
BB King and Les Paul were the 2 coolest of all I'd say... Les is too darn
funny and BB is the most humble guy on the earth I think.

    Here's BB signing my book:

    Me and Les Paul:

    Me and Rick Derringer:

Have also met some others but never got a picture (did get autographs from most):

Gary Rossington - cool guy, played at a charity softball game in Atlanta
Ed King - cool guy, played at a charity softball game in Atlanta
Leon Wilkeson - very cool and funny (same softball game)
Joe Walsh - drunk as a skunk but he played great
    Glenn Frey - nice guy
Dickey Betts - kinda' in a hurry (in one of "those moods" that he's known for )

I met her once, too. The hotel I was working at while in college ended up having a bunch of bands in house for some big music festival. I know it was under much different circumstances, but she wasn't exactly nice to me and the staff that night. And it's not like we were a group of star-struck employees going ga-ga over the famous people in the house since it happened regularly.

Her manager was, on the other hand, VERY cool and polite.

Now that I think of it, I met Joan Jett while working there too. She was pretty cool.

That's the place I met Dave Matthews on another occasion. He threw out his back helping his roadies and later, while I was helping him out the door when he was leaving the hotel, I told him: "I told you you shouldn't have been dancing on tables all night long". He laughed and told me "It seemed like a good idea at the time."

I also took LeRoi Moore (Dave's sax player, RIP) to get his take-out order from a local steak place. Talk about a cool cat...we had a really cool conversation during the car ride out and back to that hotel. What a genuine guy...can't believe he's gone.

Starting to digress...but those are some of my stories.

that, of course, they are many in number; or that, after all, they are other than the little,

"Lonesome Dave", eh? How cool is that?

Johnny Thunders said "hi" to me one time when I was hanging out at the Peppermint Lounge in NYC. I've also met some not so famous guitarists like Woody Mann, Bob Brozman and John Cephas. And, I shook Jorma Kaukonen's hand once. This certainly doesn't qualify, but I also met Rick Derringer's ex-wife Liz one time when I was doing a video with my old band. My only other claim to fame was opening for Motorhead at Irving Plaza. Oh, and Johnny Winter bumped into me last week after doing a show at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY. He can't really see anymore.
