    Making the #3 position "useful"...

I love cluck positions #2 and #4 but I've never liked the sound of the middle pickup by itself. Is there a way to wire the regular 5-way switch so that #1, #2, #4, and #5 remain the same but #3 becomes bridge-neck combo?

Not that I can see with a standard 5 way switch... Maybe with a super switch.. I'm not sure.

It might be cool if you could somehow get a "qwack" from wiring the number 3 position so that the bridge and neck are on together and in "qwack" mode.

I've got mine rigged with a push/pull pot to pop the neck pu in no matter what else is on. I get the bridge/neck twang just fine but it would be cool if I didn't have to bother with an extra switch.

You, sir, want one of these: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electron...aswitches.html

The middle position is bridge and neck together. Simple, elegant, tastes like chicken.

Curtis, did anyone ever tell you that you looked like Dierks bentley in your younger days?

    Well, you do.

I like the Strat's middle position.
It's one of my favorites, so I would wire a blender pot or add a switch to have my cake and eat it too!

Well, I'm not so sure about that. I'm only 33. Hopefully the downward slide will even out a bit from here on out.

It's kids that do it to you. My boy's first year of life took about ten years out of me.

Hey, I like the strat's middle position too. I even got one of them there crazy switches I posted a while ago and never got around to installing it. I couldn't make up my mind whether I could live without the middle pickup or not. I'm sure I'll give it a try sooner or later.

My three pickup telemocaster has a super switch in it. Here's what it does:
    1. bridge
    2. bridge & middle
    3. middle
    4. bridge & neck
    5. neck

So I get the tele sounds and I get all the strat sounds except "middle and neck" which I enjoy but can still manage to live without.

The cool thing about having the three pickups on a strat is that there are LOTS of useful and semi-useful combinations. I mean, if you start talking about series, phase, etc.

I used to have my strat wired up with a pull switch on every pot to do something crazy. However I eventually went back to a stock 5 way switch. It's enough. It's simple, elegant, and sufficient for me. I don't spend my time fiddling with switches and trying to remember what they all do.
    s'all goof.

    Curtis,
Have you been to Howe Caverns? My father has property about a 1/2 hour away right outside of Cherry Valley, NY.

Sure thing. Last fall my old college roommate had a gig up in CT (he's an actor). The wife and kids and I packed in the car for a long weekend jaunt up through New York state and on over.

Howe Caverns was very, very cool. That was probably the best cave type thing I've ever been in (can't comment on TeleBob's MAN CAVE).

It's really beautiful country up there, ragtweed.

Has this thread been derailed or what? I love it!

I was in Luray Caverns on a Boy Scout trip when I was a kid. I probably should go back at some point to compare.

The coolest aspect of Howe Caverns was the boat ride! Part of the caverns are full of water. You get in these boats and drift along the cave for a while. Then you have to turn around and come back. They're definitely very "active" caves.

I live in a region of PA with a lot of caverns. The coolest I remember (it's closed now) was called Onyx Cave. The passages were very narrow and clastrophobic. It wasn't as "developed" - no wide, paved walkways or anything. It was much more natural and unspoiled and uncommercialized looking.
    s'all goof.

There are several non-commercial caves in the region. When I was younger and dumber, I spent some time in Knox Cave, just down the road. That ended when some friends of mine got busted for trespassing.

Knox Cave was very cool. There's a room you could probably play football inside.

I have the StewMac Megaswitch on both my strats. It's terrific, in my book.
