Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
A 64 Vibrolux Reverb I had untill sombody stole it. That amp was incredible. I also had a 73-74 Bandmaster no reverb with the really big 2x12 cab. It was similer to the Vibrolux but with a much fatter sound. I shoulda kept it. But that cab was really big.

The latest mod, which is probably blasphemous, was the addition of negative feedback. Neo Fauve would absolutely love this amp now. It's a lot like my 6G2, but with more balls, and strangely enough less compression. Genuine clean tones, that morph into singing distortion. Brighter than before, but driven hard, you can still Neil Young it.
Oddly enough, with the -fb, it's actually louder than before, I'm guessing because it's a lot more focused, with less power expended on loose bass.
Cool stuff. Meanwhile I'm waiting on Vintage Electronics {crickets} ...

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
Best I ever played once was for a single gig with a silver-face non-master volume Super Reverb full stage volume. Hold a E major cord at the end of a song and it would just rumble!
Best I have ever played regularly is my own '65 Bandmaster.

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
BF/SF: The '67 SR I just regrettably had to sell, followed closely by a '70 SFVR blackfaced, what a sweet amp. Just as closely by the BF Princeton Jim Complingo played when I last saw him.
Tweed: '55 bassman, the lower wattage, 2-input model. Lovely tone, the kind of sound that makes you spend stupid money trying to hear more of it.
Brown: '61? Super, a howling, tough sound, harder than tweed but not quite BF either.

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
The new low-power Tweed Twin reissue. That thing was warmer than a Phoenix barbecue in August!

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
i played a 65' RI twin reverb, a slice of heaven.

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
Back in the day, a blackface bassman with dual showman cab filled with EV's and one of the early fender reverb units. With the 62 strat, awesome. Still have the amp but the cab and reverb are long gone. Way too heavy any way.
-
Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
I used to have a '62 strat, blonde w rosewood board (it got stolen). When i plugged that thing into my 66 Super 4xJBL D110F & cranked it up about to "6-7-8" it was pure heaven. In 35 years nothing else has ever come close...

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
My 64 Vibrolux Reverb was the best I've played through. Sadly, it was stolen in '89 :bawl A BF Bassman head + 2x12 cab sounded pretty good too. Too heavey for me to haul around now days.

Also the non reverb Brown and BF Vibrolux is a 1x12, not a 2x10. The BF version was only made for a short period of time. The tweed version is a whole different animal and I think it had a single 10" speaker. The Brownface amps kind of split the difference between the tweeds and BF soundwise. Leo seemd to consistantly make things brighter and brighter as he went along. Supposedly he damaged his hearing testing the first Showman amps.
The brown Vibrolux is the only Fender amp that was made with 6L6 power and a 12 inch speaker config!!!

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
OK. I'll play yor game. Its easy really. Fender Tweed 4X10 Bassman. In a tie i would say is the Blackface Super. Twins are always a runner up.

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
'59 Bassman....original.....
I bought my first tweed in '76,a Pro.Next was a '59 Bassman somewhere around '82.I never really played the latter that much;we used it as a cross-stage amp on my side of the stage for the other guitarist. One night I took the amp into a room and cranked it straight to about 6,and was blown away.By that time I had read all the "hype" about Bassmans, but it wasn't until I had this experience that I was convinced."Complexity" is a much overused word, but this amp killed my Pro,which I am VERY fond of.It became my main stage amp for the next few years, and she still reigns as the Queen of the collection.

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
I still have both of the Fenders that I liked the best. I have a Fender Concert II. My fave rig of all time is that amp, a Vox wah, TS-9, and my Strat. My other fave Fender is my 2000 Sunn Model T-50c. I love the old Fenders too, but I can't get them to do what I need them to do at the volumes I need to play at.

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
The best Fender Amp I've tried is the '65 Twin Reverb, lovely!
When I bought my Strat,in order to try it, I plugged it into a TR and I'm wondering it's the main reason I bought it!

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
My Blonde Vibro King with a Fender AM Tele with flatwounds!!

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
The best I've ever played was a '59 Tweed Deluxe...and it probably helped that I was playing a '59 Les Paul TV Junior with it...man, talk about the definition of tone...
The Bassman reish is pretty good for an off-the-shelf amp..
I haven't been able to get Twin up to the sweet spo; just way too loud for anything other than a big stage (IMO)
My modded Blues DLX is pretty nice as well...get a great sound out of it with a TS9...
-
Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
All time fave...the brown Deluxe Amp...non reverb model. Ultimate recording rig for thick overdrive with chimey top end
Current model favorite...the Super Sonic....can't wait for the 2x10 model....great on the Vibrolux setting...love it.

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
Bassman 20 with a 12" speaker in a custom cab. I play harp through it and love the sound. Also own a Bassman 20 origional with 15" speaker that is great for harp. http://demont.net/harmony/myharmonie...Custom_Cab.jpg

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
Best Fender amp I have ever played was a 69 Pro Reverb. As far as know all that had been done to it was relatively routine maintenance caps and the like. I had become a fan of really glassy almost clean tones and this thing was delivering the goods. It must have taken me all of 10 seconds to get a good tone.
At the time 40 watts seemed a bit much for what I was going to do with it, mostly playing in my bedroom and the odd blues jam. In retrospect I should have gotten it anyway.

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!

Re: The BEST sounding Fender amp?! Come on!
The best sounding amps I have played are all DR's made before 1970. one SF had a JBL speaker and tone to die for. my 66 deluxe after going to the shop and getting the tubes bias and a cap changed was unbelieveable. so blue sounding w/ the reverb like taking a dip in a deep blue pool of water on a hot day.I did have a Rivera r55 retubed w/ a weber blue dog that would come close to getting that total blackfaced sound.Rivera makes some great sounding amps when clean, hard to get around that, but I never cared for the overdrive side on em.
