Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
I just got a 60th Anniv. USA Strat with the 57/62 pickups in it and they have the beveled pole pieces. What difference in tone (if any) do beveled pole pieces make? A more focused tone? I've never had a guitar with them and am not sure what the difference is or how it could affect the tone.

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
Not much difference if any. The purpose of the beveling is to make it easier to get the top flange of the flatwork on the rods when building the bobbin.

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
I always thought it was to stop the piece from chipping during their life. It's just a tiny cut called a "chamfer" on the vintage pickups. Newer pickups have a ridiculous bevel as not seen on vintage pickups.
Chamfer:
A small, angled surface added to an edge of a workpiece. A chamfer removes the sharp edge and helps eliminate burrs.

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
I always figured it was to reduce assembly errors, to make it much easier to press the polepieces into the bobbins.
Actually, it will have some effect on the shape of the mag-field, but whether or not it makes a discernable differnce in how they sound? My gut is that if so it would be sublte at best.

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
I've seen it suggested (or "claimed") that the beveled magnets "focus" the magnetic field beneath each string. I can't see that being a good thing as you will pull the strings out of the focused field whenever you bend them !

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
I think it enhances the angularity of the overall tone.
Think...beveled mids. As opposed to scooped mids.
Sorry for being a smart ash!

I'm with you on that, very little difference.

Cherry goes again with the purple hearted puns. I expected Rose wood do that type of thing, but knot Fedora! And now every sap will want to branch out on a long lumbering vein of puns because it's a poplar subject. Shure, maybe it will entertain those of you that pine for a thread side track, but don't Fir-get what the real topic is. Also, don't come birching to me about the bushel if puns in this post. You all saw it coming and to merely com-plane is a mis-teak and walnut make things any better.
Hey , we can ply wood puns all day, but eventually I'll get the shakes, then break out in shingles. I oak we can cedar way past this problem, and still be fronds.

I don't get the attraction of the wood puns in a thread about magnets.
You're out of your field. Go pull your pun somewhere else.

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
Eric Johnson would know the angle of the bevel.

Actually, I think he has them re-ground at every venue to compensate for the slight local variations in the earth's magnetic field.

Hey I thought I had good enough Gauss for continuing the puns. I guess I was just standing on rare earth.

Knock it off or I'll be forced to engage in some coercivity...

This thread did go south, but we're all still here. Prolly 'cause opposites attract.

Soon to be inducted into the Hall of Shame. Right hands rule!
Something smells - maybe we should call the B.O. Savart.

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
damn, you did some research for those!
BTW, they don't need to be so precise, they just have to be close... like in HORSESHOES

I was thinking that as I typed it.
The Biot joke was lost on me--had to look it up.

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
Turns out Savart's law of induction is one of the key reasons an airplane wing produces lift - that's why we use the term "induced" drag - as a homage to Savart. Useless triva mode off.

Re: Beveled vs. Regular magnet pole pieces...
I live for "useless" trivia. Just compiled some more. Thanks!

I don't know anything about that. I guess I'm just an idiot savart...

He, he, I thought Eddy Effects meant VanHalens's stompboxes.
