Help with Strat Identification.
Can anyone help me with identifying this Strat model and colour? Is it a custom-shop one-off? I want to try to build/buy a Strat to identical spec.
The image below is from Fender Frontline Magazine Fall 1994 Vol 14 and shows Guitarist for Cry of Love/Black Crowes, Audley Freed (my favorite Strat abuser).
Unfortunately, I have no other images of this guitar.

Re: Help with Strat Identification.
I think those were a custom shop version of the American Standard Strat.
A shop near me had a couple of them hanging on the wall for years.
Re: Help with Strat Identification.
Do you think it might be one of these "Holoflake" guitars?

I'm not sure as the one in the link is a mixture of several different colours. I've actually seen Audley play the one in the ad in some vid footage and don't remember the colour changing dramatically from different angles. It seemed to stay a dark, sparkly black/aubergine

Looks more like this one:

Have I answered my own question!?
Re: Help with Strat Identification.
Yep, that's probably the same. Looks just like a fancy-painted ASS...um American Standard Strat. Probably got different pickups, though.

That's the one I was thinking of.
Re: Help with Strat Identification.
That was a limited finish called holoflake. Like a hologram those big flakes under the finish catch the light and play all kinds of tricks with your eyes.
Was a slow seller.

Reviving this old thread with hopes of finding a scan of the image the OP posted in 2005. I used to have this edition of the Frontline magazine, was a huge Cry of Love fan and wanted one of these Haloflake Strats. I remember playing one in 1994 at a Fender dealer (Woodsys) in Kent. Didn't have the funds at the time but I have been considering running one down now and would like to have a copy of the the old Fender promo shot of Freed with the guitar.
If anyone can share/post a jpg or PDF of the image it would be much appreciated.

Aye Saw The Icehouse Video Of "Electric Blue".

Re: Help with Strat Identification.
Welcome to TFF, @FriendlyFil! Without photos it's almost impossible to make an educated guess. An all-black Stratocaster is likely not a stock model, but one that has been modified somewhere along the way. For me, the matching headstock color is the key. Fender's history is spotty, considering the company has changed hands a couple of times, and the addition of the Custom Shop, Mod Shop, and Fender Special Runs (FSR), identifying one can be like searching for the Holy Grail. Even serial numbers don't always reveal everything.
Re: Help with Strat Identification.
My guess would be a GC special run - but that's a guess. They're big on the painted headstocks.

+1
I think Fuji-Gen built some models with the all-black treatment as well (HM Strats?).
